Active reading:
As we read the introduction to
“Kaleidoscope” (pages 33-35) try to
identify where Ray Bradbury has
used metaphor, or simile.

Metaphor the comparison of two UNLIKE things.


"The (first thing) is the (second thing).
For example “The running river is a sleek blue ribbon.”

A simile is a comparison of two UNLIKE things using "like" or "as”.


"The (first thing) is like the (second thing).
For example “His eyes were like holes poked in the snow.”
Metaphor the comparison of two UNLIKE things.
"The (first thing) is the (second thing).
For example “The moonlight was a streak of silver pointing to
the earth.”
A simile is a comparison of two UNLIKE things using "like" or "as”.
"The (first thing) is like the (second thing).
For example “The man cried like a baby needing food.”

Extended written task:
How has Ray Bradbury used metaphor and simile
effectively in the introduction to “Kaleidoscope”?

You must comment on at least 2 quotes.

You should give an explanation about what the


intended effect on the reader is (and saying “it makes
you want to read on” is NOT an adequate explanation!)

You could go into more detail with your explanation by


identifying key words in the quote as well as writing
about the quote as a whole.
