Chapter – Hand Files

• Files are used to cut a shape of metals.
• Removing small fine amount of materials from
the surface.
• Files consist of hardened metal shapes with a
number of chisel like teeth cut into them.
• Teeth act like small chisel removing small chip
of materials.
Files are categories
Size, Shape, type of cut and coarseness of cut.
Files

Tip/Point
Tang :- The Tang is the end of a file that fits into a handle.

Heel :- Heel is the portion of the file above a tang when the
main file body begins.

Face :- Face is the long flat surface used as the primary

cutting surface.

Tip point :- Tip of the file is the end opposite on the

tang edge long narrow surface that is
perpendicular to the face.
Length :- Form the heel to the tips/point.

They are vasy in length in 2 inch increment from 4 to 20 inches

(common-6,8,10,12)
• Materials – Steel (High Carbon Steel)

• Cutting edges :- File having parallel rows of

cutting edges or teeth. Rows are diagonal to
the edge.
Cut oF File
1. Single Cut :- Single cut file has one row of teeth. And are
cut at an angle between 65 to 85 degree, and produce a
smooth material finish/light pressure.

2. Double Cut :- Double cut file has two row of teeth. One
set of rows are set at an angle of about 45 degree and the
other between 70 to 80 degree. It’s used to remove large
amount of material. Double cut file will remove metal
faster but will leave a rougher finish than single cut.
3. Raspcut :- Raspcut has series of raised individual teeth. The
Rasp makes fast but rough cut. It is used primarily on soft
materials, e.g. Aluminium, lead.

4. Curve Tooth File :- Curve tooth file has relatively large spaces
between the teeth, which allow the file to be used on soft
materials without clogging.
• Coarseness Of Cut :- The Coarseness of the cut for both
single and double cut. It files is related to the spacing
between the teeth going for more coarse to finest.

1. Rough
2. Coarse
3. Bastard
4. Second cut
5. Smooth cut
6. Dead smooth cut

The spacing of the cut is not fixed but is dependent

upon the length of the file. As the file get shorter
the spacing decrease and the cut becomes finest.
Types of Files
1. Hand File

2. Half Round File :-

3. Three Square File :-
