DEFINITION
• Concrete mixers are used to mix the gradients
of concrete.
• The concrete mixers are made either
stationary or portable.
• Portable mixers are common in construction
industry.
• The power to drive the concrete mixers is
obtained from petrol or diesel engine or from
an electric motor.
TYPES OF CONCRETE MIXERS USED
FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKS
1. Hand fed tilting drum mixers
2. Loader fed tilting drum mixers
3. Reversing drum mixers
4. Rollers-pan mixers
1.HAND FED TILTING DRUM MIXERS
• These are the smaller capacity mixers.
• Aggregate , cement and water are fed into the
drum by hand.
• The revolving drum with its mixing blades
gives a lifting , combing and agitation to mix
the concrete.
• It is fed by hand through buckets directly into
the drum.
2.LOADER FED TILTING DRUM MIXERS
• These mixers are of larger capacity as compared
to the hand fed tilting drum mixers are fitted with
a loading hopper operated by a wire rope for
feeding the aggregate and cement into the drum.
• Water is supplied to the drum from a measuring
tank operated by hand lever provided above to
discharge water directly into the drum.
• The mixing drum is supported on solid cast iron
yoke and can be tilted on either side.
3.REVERSING DRUM MIXERS
• This type of mixer is used on comparatively
larger works .
• The mixing drum is in horizontal position and
is non-tilting type .
• It has two sets of blades , one blade mixes the
mix while drum is rotated in one direction ,
the other set of blades discharges the mix
when the drum is rotation is reserved.
• The drum is fed by a loading hopper.
Contd:
• The hopper commonly mounted on four
rollers moves on channel run-ways.
• The hopper is lifted upwards by wire-rope
winding and unwinding on power operated
drum.
• These mixers are driven either by diesel
engines or electric motors through reduction
gears and reversing gears.
4.ROLLER-PAN MIXERS
• These mixers primarily used for mortar.
• The rollers and mixing blades rotate in a pan
and not only mix the material but also
produce a kneading and crushing action.
• The mix is discharged trough a gate in the
floor of the pan .
• The drive to the rollers and mixing blade is
provided by either diesel engine or electric
motor through the bevel gears.
HANDLING AND TRANSPORTING THE
CONCRETE
• Concrete may be handled and transported by
several methods , such as truck mixers,
concrete dumpers , concrete pumps ,buckets
handled by cranes ,hosting towers or cables
and belt conveyors.
• The method to be adopted is selected
depending upon the conditions of work.
TRUCK MIXERS
• Concrete mixed batch is transported from the
batching and mixing plant to the construction
site.
• Fully or partly mixed concrete is transported
through the truck mixers.
• The mixing operation is carried out in a transit
truck mixer during the journey.
• Dry mix material are fed into the truck mixers
from a dry batching plant
• After measuring the quantities of various
constituents other then water, i.e.
aggregate,sand and cement.
• Then the transit mixers transport it to the
work site and mixes it during the journey
using its own water supply.
• These transit mixers are having the large
water tank, a meter and a pump for supplying
water for mixing and for cleaning the drum.
• The mixing blades are mixing when the drum
is rotating.
CONCRETE VIBRATORS
• For compacting the concrete after its
placement, concrete vibrators are used.
• with the help of these vibrators it has become
possible to place large volume of concrete
quickly and easily particular in intricate
positions
• The vibrators help in producing concrete thus
produced has better resistance to the seepage
and gives better strength
TYPES OF VIBRATORS
1. Internal vibrators
2. External vibrators
INTERNAL VIBRATORS
• These vibrator are also known as the
immersion or poker vibrators.
• These are immersed in the freshly placed
concrete.
• These vibrator can easily lifted by single man.
• These vibrators are driven driven by petrol
engine ,diesel engine, compressed air or
electric motors.
• These vibrators has a flexible shaft , which
gets its drive from the engine, and is enclosed
in a hose.
• The shaft produces vibrations in the needle
through an eccentric .
• Care should be taken that while using it , avoid
bending of the flexible hose through small
radii.
EXTERNAL VIBRATORS
• These are also known as surface or platform
vibrators.
• The surface vibrators consists of a rectangular
pan, which is placed on the surface of
concrete to be compacted.
• The driving unit which may be either an
engine or an electric motor , is mounted
above the vibrator and is carried on
antivibration springs.
• The frequency generally from 3000to 4000
vibrations per min. at an amplitude of 0.4mm
to 0.5mm.
