INTRODUCTION
•A concrete pump is a machine used for transferring
liquid concrete by pumping.
•Large quantities of concrete can be transported by
means of pumping through pipelines over
appreciable distances that may not be easily
accessible by other means of delivery.
PRINCIPLE OF CONCRETE PUMP
•A basic concrete pump was initially developed as a two-cylinder hydraulic
pump.
•This works by the principle of one piston drawing the concrete from the
hopper (concrete source) and the other piston pushing it into the
discharge outlet pipe.
•The decision of which cylinder has to be opened to the hopper and which
must be opened to the discharge pipe is controlled by means of a valve.
TYPES OF CONCRETE
PUMPS
On the basis of working principle, there are two types of concrete pumps:
1.Direct acting or horizontal piston type concrete pumps.
2.Squeeze type concrete pumps.
WORKING OF DIRECT ACTING
TYPE CONCRETE PUMPS
• A majority of the concrete
pumps are of the direct-
acting, horizontal piston-
type with semi-rotary
valves.
• The concrete is fed into the
pump by gravity and partly
by suction created due to
the reciprocating motion of
the horizontally-acting
piston, while the semi-
rotary valves open and close
alternately
Features :
•Gives of output of 60m^3/h with 22cm diameter delivery pipes.
•Size of aggregates should be three times less than size of the pipe used
in pump.
•Suction pressure 0.08N/mm^2.
Working of Squeeze type
concrete pump
• Squeeze type pumps are smaller
portable peristaltic type pumps.
• The concrete from the collecting
hopper is fed by rotating blades
into a flexible pipe connected to
the pumping chamber, which is
under a vacuum of about 0.08
N/mm2.
•The vacuum ensures that, except
when being squeezed by the
rotating rollers, the pipe shape
remains cylindrical and thus
permits a continuous flow of
concrete
Features of Squeeze type
concrete pump
• Gives output of 20m^3/h
with 75mm diameter pipes.
•Suction pressure of
0.08N/mm^2.
•It is a portable type pump.
TYPES OF DIRECT
ACTING TYPE PUMPS
Majority of pumps used are of direct acting type:
1.Trailor mounted concrete pump
2.Truck mounted concrete pump
3.Stationary concrete pump
4.Shotcrete pump
TRUCK MOUNTED/ BOOM
CONCRETE PUMP
•This type of pump is attached to a truck
and uses a remote controlled articulating
robotic arm, also known as boom, to
place the concrete accurately at the
construction site.
• It is also known as a truck mounted
boom pump.
• Boom pumps are generally used in large
construction projects because of its
capability of pumping high volume of
concrete in less time. It also saves
substantial labor because of its multi-
purpose robotic arm.
• Range of boom 17-62m.
• Pumping rate 140m^3/h.
• Concrete pressure 12N/mm^2.
• Number of outriggers legs :4
• Used in projects like medium
rise buildings, flyovers etc.
TRAILER MOUNTED CONCRETE
PUMP
•This type of pump is mounted on a trailer
and requires steel or rubber hoses to be
attached to the outlet of the machine.
•The hoses are generally manually attached
and can also be joined to another extension
hoses to reach the appropriate site where
the concrete needs to be put.
•Trailer pumps pump concrete at a rate lower
than that of boom pumps and therefore are
used in applications that require smaller
volume pumping such as swimming pools,
sidewalks, and small homes concrete slabs.
TRAILER MOUNTED
CONCRETE PUMP
•Range can be managed acc
to requirement with help of
hoses.
•Pumping pressure
7N/mm^2.
•Used for dams, power
projects and concreting at
confined areas.
STATIONARY PUMPS
•It is provided with vertical column with boom
placed on it.
•Height of the column is decided depending upon
the project height.
•Used for concreting at high rise buildings and
construction at confined areas etc.
SHOTCRETE PUMPS
• One way of concrete spraying is by using the
shotcrete method. Shotcrete machine is an
equipment used for concrete or mortar
spraying.
• The basic components of a shotcrete
machine are the concrete pump, compressor,
the control and the remote, the arm or hose
and the nozzle.
• With this different components, the concrete
or mortar is being conveyed by the trapped
air to the nozzle and being controlled to be
sprayed into any area.
WORKING OF SHOTCRETE
PUMP
•The concrete mix is pumped with a Concrete Pump to the end of the
pipeline where a special "shotcrete nozzle" is attached.
• That shotcrete nozzle introduces compressed air to the concrete. This
compressed air typically comes from a 165-185cfm air compressor .
•The addition of the compressed air adds velocity to the concrete so it
sprays out of the nozzle. This velocity, combined with the the shotcrete
mix, allows the concrete to be sprayed on slopes, vertical walls, and
overhead
•.
APPLICATIONS OF THE
PUMPED CONCRETE
•Slab building foundations
•Building foundations with basements
•High-rise buildings
•In-ground swimming pools
•Retaining wall construction
•Artificial rock construction
REQUIREMENT OF THE
PUMPED CONCRETE
•The acceptable rigid pipe can be made of steel or plastic
and is available in sizes from 3 to 8 inches in diameter.
•Slump should be b/w 50-150mm.
•Water content in concrete should be optimum, otherwise
coarse aggregates will exert pressure on pipe walls.
•Air entraining admixtures helpful in small amount, too
much air can make pumping very inefficient.
ADVANTAGES OF CONCRETE
PUMPS
Faster Concrete Placement:
• Speed of the pour is always an important factor when it comes
to any-sized construction project. One of the benefits of
concrete pumping is that it is a faster way to place concrete over
more traditional methods.
Less Labor:
•. Concrete pumping generally requires less in the way of labor
than other methods of concrete pouring. The site will seem less
congested, and you can also use key personnel for other
important tasks when the concrete is placed directly.
Stable End Product:
• Concrete pumping results in a more stable end product, which means the
safety level of your project is higher and the durability is also higher. For the
customer, a more durable concrete product means you won’t have to pay for
maintenance or a brand new pour for a longer period of time, which is going
to save money.
Concrete Pouring Accuracy:
• Using a boom or a line pump for pumping concrete is going to improve your
pouring accuracy. For complex locations, high-rise buildings or insulated
concrete form walls, accuracy is of the utmost importance.
Weathering conditions
•Concrete placed by pumping is not affected by atmospheric conditions as
it is transferred by means
DISADVANTAGES OF
CONCRETE PUMPS
The use of pumping concrete is not suitable whenever the
distance is too long, and the height is too high.
For pumped concrete to be transported, the concrete must
have a pumpability, which will raise the water-cement ratio
of the concrete. Shrinkage and cracking are common
problems with such concrete.
