What is CPM?
-THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM) IS A STEP-BY-STEP PROJECT
MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUE FOR PROCESS PLANNING THAT DEFINES CRITICAL AND
NON-CRITICAL TASKS WITH THE GOAL OF PREVENTING TIME-FRAME PROBLEMS AND
PROCESS BOTTLENECKS.

-A METHOD TO CONTROL COST AND TIME.

ORIGIN OF CPM
-THE CPM WAS DEVELOPED IN THE 1950S BY DUPONT, AND WAS FIRST USED IN MISSILE-
DEFENSE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS. SINCE THAT TIME, THE CPM HAS BEEN ADAPTED TO
OTHER FIELDS INCLUDING HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRODUCT RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT.
SEVERAL STEPS IN MAKING CPM

1.) DEFINE THE REQUIRED TASKS AND PUT THEM DOWN IN AN ORDERED (SEQUENCED) LIST.
2.) CREATE A FLOWCHART OR OTHER DIAGRAM SHOWING EACH TASK IN RELATION TO THE
OTHERS.
3.) IDENTIFY THE CRITICAL AND NON-CRITICAL RELATIONSHIPS (PATHS) AMONG TASKS.
4.) DETERMINE THE EXPECTED COMPLETION OR EXECUTION TIME FOR EACH TASK.
5.) LOCATE OR DEVISE ALTERNATIVES (BACKUPS) FOR THE MOST CRITICAL PATHS.
ADVATAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CPM

ADVANTAGES

• REDUCE THE RISK OF OVERLOOKING ESSENTIAL TASK AND PROVIDES A BLUEPRINT FOR
LONG RANGE PLANNING AND COORDINATION OF THE PROJECT.
• EASIER TO PLAN, SCHEDULE AND CONTROL PROJECT
• IDENTIFY CRITICAL TASKS
• DETERMINE THE RESOURCE REQUIRED
• IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY
• REDUCTION OF PROJECT COST
• THE CPM MAKES IT EASIER FOR THE PROJECT MANAGERS TO BUILD A TEAM AND CREATE
A HUMAN NETWORK FOR EFFICIENT HANDLING OF MUTLITASKED PROJECT
• THE CPM BIND THE ENTIRE TEAM TOGETHER AND MOTIVATES THE HUMAN RESOURCES IN
TIMELY COMPLETION OF THE TASKS IN A PROJECT

DISADVANTAGES

• DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND FOR BEGINNERS


• COMPUTER SOFTWARE CAN BE USE BUT EXPENSIVE
• IF THE PROJECT IS FAR TOO BULKY AND LENGTHY, THE CPM REQUIRES SOFTWARE TO
MONITOR THE PLAN
• CPM CAN BECOME INEFFECTIVE AND DIFFICULT TO MANAGE IF IT’S NOT WELL-
DEFINED AND STABLE
• IT CANNOT EFFECTIVELY HANDLE SUDDEN CHANGES IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF
THE PLAN ON GROUND.
• IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REDRAW THE ENTIRE CPM CHART IF THE PLAN OF THE
PROJECT SUDDENLY CHANGES MIDWAY.
• CPM CANNOT FORM AND CONTROL THE SCHEDULES OF THE PERSONS INVOLVED
IN THE PROJECT.
