Introduction
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), previously North Delhi Power
Limited, is joint venture between the Government of the National Capital Territory of
Delhi and Tata Power Co. Ltd., which holds a 51% majority stake in the venture.
It started operations on 1 July 2002 and currently serves 7 million people in the North
and North-west parts of Delhi. It has a registered consumer base of 1.6 million.

The company’s distribution automation project is based on systems such

as SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), GIS (Geographical
Information System), OMS (Outage Management System), DMS (Distribution
Management System) and OT’s (Operation Technologies).

The SCADA controlled and unmanned grid stations, GSM based Street Lighting
System, SMS based Fault Management System and Automatic Meter Reading employed
by the company are all firsts in the capital city area. Modern technologies such as High
Voltage Distribution (HVDS) System and LT Arial Bunch Conductor are also being used
by them to curb power theft in the region. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd is the first
Indian utility to develop and set up Geographical Information System which has
seamless integration with SCADA, SAP-ISU and Fixed Asset register. This system has
unique mechanism of asset management, complaint management, network planning, etc.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited is owned by the Government of Delhi and Tata
Power. A majority stake of 51% was acquired by Tata Power in 2002-03 post the unbundling
of the Delhi Government owned Delhi Vidyut Board in the form of equity and preference
shares. Since then it has paid a total dividend of Rs.367.41 crores on five occasions to its
stakeholders – Tata Power and the Delhi Govt. In mid-2008, the company issued bonus
shares. In 2014, TP-DDL paid a total of Rs.1285 crores as dividend to its shareholders.

By 2008, TPDDL had achieved 100% consumer indexing using GIS in its area of
business, the first step towards implementing its smart grid project. The second phase of the
smart grid project was launched in October, 2013

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited was

hailed for its initiatives in smart grid
technologies at the International Conference &
Exhibition on Smart Grids and Smart Cities
organized by India Smart Grid Forum 2015
(ISGF) in March, 2015
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Amit
Bansal, Assistant General Manager for providing me an
opportunity to do my internship and project work in
“TATA Power Delhi Distribution LTD.”
I sincerely thank Mr. Akshay Gaurav & Manish
Sharma for their guidance and encouragement in
carrying out this project work. I also wish to express my
gratitude to the officials and other staff members of
TATA Power Delhi Distribution LTD who rendered their
help during the period of my internship.
Energy Meters
The meter which is used for
measuring the energy utilizes by the
electric load is known as the energy
meter. The energy is Total Power
consumed and utilized by the load at
a particular interval of time. It is
used in domestic and industrial AC
circuit for measuring the power
consumption. Watt Hour Meter or
Energy Meter is an instrument which
measures amount of electrical
energy used by the consumer.
 Basic Types of Energy Meters

It is the popularly known and

most common type of age old watt
hour meter. It consists of rotating
aluminum disc mounted on a spindle
between two electro magnets. Speed
of rotation of disc is proportional to
the power and this power is
integrated by the use of counter
mechanism and gear trains. It
comprises of two silicon steel
laminated electromagnets i.e., series
and shunt magnets.

In analog type electronic energy

meters, voltage and current values
are obtained by voltage dividers
and current transformers.
A digital energy meter displays the
readings of energy used on a digital
display (LCD or LED). No moving
parts are present in this type of
energy meters. It consumes less
power and starts measuring
instantaneously when connected to
load.
• Digital Energy Meters came in Single Phase and 3 Phase both types

The single phase energy meters are universally used for energy
measurements in domestic and industrial area. Single phase type energy
meter is also popularly known as watt-hour meter.
Features :
 Meter Records correct energy with same
accuracy under reverse current connection.
 Available with LCD type display.
 No mechanical wear & tear.
 It is available in Single Phase, Two Wire &
accuracy class-1

Application :
Residential, Industrial and Commercial
Complexes etc

Single Phase Meter

 Three Phase Energy Meter
Three phase electricity is connected at 440 volts, by three active wires
or phases and one neutral. This is mostly used in industrial and large
commercial settings where powerful appliances are powered. There
are eight terminals in three phase energy meter. First six terminals for
phases and the last two terminals for neutral point
 Equipments Required for Installation Meter :

 Safety Helmet with VISOR

• Ladder With Rubber Shoe & having
RedPaint
• Rubber Mat while workonline
• Rubber Safety Hand Gloves
• Insulated all Tools – Spanner sets,
Screw Driver, Plier etc.
• Double TestLamp
• Rubber Tube for Bus-barconnection
• LTABC PhaseSeparator
• Plastic TRAY for puttingwaste
armored pieces etc.

Application Diagram
 Procedure of Installation meter
• First of all, connect the three-phase
energy meter between 3 to 6 feet as
shown in fig.
• Insert the R,Y,B phases and neutral at
input in meter and screw properly.
• Insert the R,Y,B phases and neutral at
output through ELCB/MCB/MCCB near
meter and screw properly.

ELCB(Earth Leakage
Circuit Breaker)
• ELCB is must above 2KW load.
• Connect the modem through female chord .
• Communication chord is connected properly to the RJ port
of the meter.
• Connect the cable armored wire at the meter box end
through proper size of thimble on earthing nut.

• Before starting of work check the condition of pole any
leakage current, place for ladder, condition of network,
availability of earthing at pole.

• Arrange the safety cones around the pole.

• Before starting the work ensure that lineman wearing
gloves, helmet with visor, safety shoes, safety belt, rope
etc.
• Tie/hook the safety belt with the pole to avoid fall
from pole.
• Connection of the service line connected through only with
the I.P.C (insulated piercing connectors).

• I.P. Connector should be tightened through proper size of

insulated T- spanner set.
• Check the Phases with double test lamp by
connecting one wire with Neutral & 2nd wire
connected with the phase of ELCB / MCCB / MCB.
• Engineer check the meter accuracy, and mention the
results in the service order.
• Seal the Meter with Green Polycarbonate seals.
• 2 seals at Meter terminal, & 4 seals at Meter box.
 Connection through bus bar:
• If consumer apply for first connection in their premise and building
constructed more than 2 floor. Than first connection should be install
through bus bar.
• If there are already 2 connections existing at site and consumer apply
for another connection, than connection should be install through bus
bar and existing two connection should be connected through new
installed bus bar.
• Bus bar height should be 3 to 6 ft. From ground level & straight
(vertically) with inserting the cable from bottom side.
• Earthing should be connected through the armor of service line with
thimble to the earthing plate of bus bar.
• Vermin proofing should be done of remaining all the pending holes
through M-SEAL.
• Connection should be done in sequence w.r.t. color coding of
phases.
