HEAT TRANSFER
RADIATION
What is Radiation?
It represents the
energy emitted by
matter in the form of
electromagnetic
waves as a result of
the changes in the
electronic
configurations of the
atoms or molecules.
HEAT TRANSFER
RADIATION
Important Features of Radiation:
1. No Material medium required.
2. Radiative Heat transfer can occur
between two bodies separated by a
medium colder than both bodies
3. Fastest way
h =of energy

x 10-34 J· s
4. Characterized by their frequency ν or
wavelength λ.
5. Electromagnetic radiation viewed as
the propagation of a collection of
discrete packets of energy called
photons or quanta.
HEAT TRANSFER
RADIATION
Thermal Radiation
- Energy emitted by bodies because of
their temperature only.
It is a Surface
phenomenon.
ABSORPTIVITY, REFLECTIVITY AND TRANSMISSIVITY
RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER
What is the maximum amount of radiation Blackbody
that can be emitted by a surface at a given
temperature?
Perfect emitter of radiation: At a specified temperature
and wavelength, no surface can emit more energy than a
blackbody.
Example:
Consider a 20-cm-diameter spherical ball at
800 K suspended in air as shown in Figure.
Assuming the ball closely approximates a
blackbody, determine
(a) the total blackbody emissive power,
(b) the total amount of radiation emitted
by the ball in 5 min, and
(c) the spectral blackbody emissive power
at a wavelength of 3 μm.

Spectral Blackbody Emissive Power:
Observations:
Variation with
wavelength at any
specified temperature.
Variation with
temperature at any
wavelength.
As the temperature
increases, the peak of
the curve in Figure
shifts toward shorter
wavelengths

The area of a surface on a sphere of unit radius is
equivalent in magnitude to the solid angle it subtends.

Point to Note:
The area dS is
normal to the
direction of viewing
since dS is viewed
from the center of
the sphere.
Solid Angle
What if, in general, the differential surface area
dA is not normal to the viewing direction?
RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER
The radiation
streaming though the
surface area dS is
proportional to:
For Blackbody:
Irradiation ~ G
Radiasity ~ J
Example:
A small surface of area A1 3
cm2 emits radiation as a
blackbody at T1 600 K. Part
of the radiation emitted by A1
strikes another small surface
of area A2 5 cm2 oriented as
shown in Figure. Determine
the solid angle subtended by
A2 when viewed from A1, and
the rate at which radiation
emitted by A1 that strikes A2.
