17.1 Forming participles Teacher’s notes

A participle is the form of a verb ending in -ing (the


present participle) or -ed, -en, etc. (the past participle).

The present participle can take different forms:

simple form perfect form

active doing having + p.p.*

passive being + p.p. having been + p.p.

1 The present participle and gerund are both formed


by adding -ing to a verb, but they have different
meanings
I like swimming.

2 The past participle of most verbs is formed by


adding - ed. The past participle of some verbs is
irregular (gone, seen, found, etc.).

3 Participles can be used to do the work of a clause.


The girl wearing glasses (who is wearing
glasses) is Fred’s sister.
We call this a participle clause (also called a
participle phrase).

Present and past participles can be used like adjectives.

The woman was hit by a falling object.


The ground is covered with fallen leaves.

1 When we use a participle phrase to qualify a noun,


we usually put it after the noun it qualifies.
The boy flying a kite over there is Jane’s

17.4 Using present or past participles to explain

We can use present or past participles to say why someone


does something:
Being unwell, Tony took a day off.
(= Tony was unwell, so he took a day off.)
Not knowing what to do, I asked for her advice.
(= I did not know what to do, so I asked for her
advice.)

If the doer of the action expressed by the participle is


different from the one expressed by the main verb, it
cannot be omitted.

It being late, she decided not to call him back.


(= As it was late, she decided not to call him
back.)

17.5 Forming negatives


The negative is formed by adding not to the participle
clause. ‘Not’ comes before the participle.
Not knowing her email address, Tom couldn’t
send her a get-well e-card.
(= Tom did not know her email address, so he
couldn’t send her a get-well e-card.)
