Flexible Steel Wire Rope
The properties of a FSWR are derived from its:
• Size
• Construction
• Lay
• Core

Lifting & Slinging - Sling use

• Slings

• Steel cable

• Chain

• Nylon

Lifting & Slinging - Sling use
• Safe Working Load (SWL)
• Maximum weight, in Kg, that a sling can sustain
vertically

• Must be clearly stamped on the swedge

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 19 Updated: Dec 03

Chain
• Only use Steel Alloy Chain ( Grade 80 )
• Check for chain markings
• Check tag
• Min Dia for lifting = 5.5mm
• Max 10% wear
• All components of chain sling to be the
same size

• Discolouration – Chemical, Sunlight, High
Temperatures.

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 21 Updated: Dec 03

Synthetic Slings
Storage
• Clean, dry, well ventilated place
• Off the ground or floor
• Away from:
• Direct sunlight, ultra-violet light, fluorescent light
• Extremes of heat, sources of ignition
• Chemicals
• Possibility of mechanical damage

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 22 Updated: Dec 03

Shackles
“D” Shackle
Used for straight lift
Bow Shackle
Designed to attach two or more sling eyes to a lifting
hook. Alloys sling to “self centre”. More versatile
than “D” Shackle.

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 24 Updated: Dec 03

Eye Bolts
Straight Eyebolt
Only for vertical lifts – very limited in use

Collared Eyebolt
Used for sideways loading

Ring must be in line with lifting chain

Collar must be hard against surface

Min Dia = 12mm

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 25 Updated: Dec 03

Hooks
• Marked with SWL
• Free from damage
• Safety catch must operate correctly
• Sling must move freely on hook
• Max wear = 10%
• Max throat opened out = 5%
• Never point load hook

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 27 Updated: Dec 03

Plate Lifting Clamps
• SWL must be marked
• Use correct clamp for job
• Ensure load is balanced
• Max included angle between sling legs is 60°
• Never lift more than one plate at a time.

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 28 Updated: Dec 03

Lifting & Slinging - Sling Use

• Clamps
• Rules to use clamps
• Saddle must be close to the size of the cable

• Saddle always on working line

• Spacing between clamps is equal to 6 to 8 times the
diameter of cable
• Bolts must be equally tight

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 29 Updated: Dec 03

Spreader and Lifting Beams

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 30 Updated: Dec 03

Wedge Socket

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 31 Updated: Dec 03

Safe Slinging and Lifting Practices
Working Load Limit (WLL) – Max load that can be
applied to lifting gear.

Safe Working Load (SWL) – Can vary depending

on slinging method and Load Factors.

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 32 Updated: Dec 03

Lifting & Slinging - Evaluate the
load
 The load
 Center of gravity(cg)

• For regular volumes “cg” is situated at half height of the volumes

• To keep the load stable when lifted up

Never hook up below center of gravity

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 33 Updated: Dec 03

Lifting & Slinging - Evaluate the
load
• Volumetric mass
 equal to mass in Kg in a dm3 or in “ton in m3”
 Three categories e g:
7 to 9 tons m3 : iron, steel, cast iron, brass, bronze.
2 to 3 tons m3 : porcelain, coal, stone, aluminum,
concrete, glass.
around 1 ton m3 :wood, water, oil, cardboard.
• Weight = Volume * Volumetric mass
• It is always better to over estimate the weight.

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 34 Updated: Dec 03

Slinging Techniques
 Lifting capacity decreases as Sling angle
increases
 Different methods of slinging will alter Lift
capacity

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 35 Updated: Dec 03

Sling Techniques
2 Leg Sling Load Factor

0° =2
30° = 1.93
45° = 1.85
60° = 1.73
90° = 1.41
120° =1

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 36 Updated: Dec 03

Slinging Techniques
 Load Factors

SG / RT OFS Mechanical Lifting Program - 37 Updated: Dec 03

Lifting & Slinging - Sling Use

• Effect of angles

GOOD WRONG

• Never exceed an angle of 90°

Lifting & Slinging - Hand Signals

• Signals may vary from country to country ,rig to

rig.
• The Following slide shows commonly used best
practice hand signals.
• Make sure you always liaise and agree on
signals to be used prior to the start of any
operation.
Good Communications are a key to a safe operation
