T: So, what are we talking about today, Sam?
S: Good question, Tom! We’re looking at places
where people from different countries live and
work together. Last week, I went to Roosevelt
Avenue in New York City. How many different
nationalities of people do you think live in the
neighborhood there?
T: Um, I dunno. Five?
S: It’s a lot more than five, Tom. Listen to me
talking to Jacob, and you’ll find out! … So, I’m
on Roosevelt Avenue, one of the most
international streets in the New York City. The
people who work in the stores here come from
all over the world. Some people call it “a world
on one street!” Jacob Espinosa lives and works
here. Hi Jacob!
J: Hi Sam.
S: So, this is your store? What do you sell?
J: Yes, it’s my parents’ store. We sell candy –
we have 180 different types!
S: That’s my kind of store! And where are
you from?
J: I’m from here. But my dad’s Colombian
and my mom’s Indian.
S: And there are a lot of different stores on
this street, aren’t there?
J: Yes, it’s a long street. You can buy
anything here.
S: That’s amazing!
J: It’s a really international street, too –
people from all over have stores here. In
fact, people from 53 countries live in this
neighborhood.

S: Incredible! Tell me about some of them.
J: Well, Mr Deng’s from China. He owns three
restaurants. He cooks and serves excellent
Chinese food. And do you see that family over
there?
S: Yes, I see them.
J: They have a clothing store. Maria’s from
Mexico. Her husband’s name is Miguel – he’s
Peruvian. Their four children work in the store,
too.
S: And what about the woman over there?
The one talking on her phone.
J: That’s Anna. She works in the café across
the road with her two sisters. She’s Russian.
S: What an interesting street! Thanks for
talking to me, Jacob.
J: You’re welcome!
