MEANING OF PROBLEM-SOLVING
• Problem solving is a method or technique where
by the teacher and pupils attempt in conscious,
planned and purposeful effort to find out
solution of a problem.
DEFINITION OF PROBLEM-SOLVING
• According to Sullivan and deckar, 2001,
“Problem solving involves diagnosing or
identifying a problem and solving it and includes
decisions along the way”.

• Wisely thinks that “ problem- solving method


become a seminar method.”
ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF A
PROBLEM
• Meaningful
• Interesting
• Solvable
• Current
• Correlation with life
• Correlation with other subjects.
• Problem should arise out of the real needs of the
student.

• Solution of the problem should be find out by
students themselves working under guidance
and supervision of teacher.
• Problem should be really defined.
• The student must possess some background of
the problem which they are going to discuss.

• The students learn to be self-dependent.
• It gives power of critical judgement.
• It helps to learn how to act in a new situation.
DEMERITS OF PROBLEM-SOLVING
• There is a lack of suitable reference and source
books.
• It involve lot of time.
• Problem solving needs very capable teachers to
provide effective guidance to students.
• Generally speaking problem- solving involves
mental activity only.
• Small children do not possess sufficient
background information.
