Bio means “life or living things”, philia means “love”. Biophilia can be translated
to Love to life. It was first used by Erich From in 1964 to describe a psychological
orientation of being attracted to all that is alive and vital. The concept of biophilia
implies that humans hold a biological need for connection with nature on physical,
mental, and social levels and this connection affects our personal wellbeing,
productivity and societal relationships.”
This idea is relevant in daily life – humans travel and spend money to sight see
in national parks and nature preserves, relax on beaches, hike mountains, and
explore jungles. Further, many sports revolve around nature such as skiing,
mountain biking, and surfing. From a home perspective, people are more likely
to spend more on houses that have views of nature; buyers are willing to
spend 7% more on homes with excellent landscaping, 58% more on properties
that look at water, and 127% more on those that are waterfront.[3]

with the cantelevered birdcage seating and infinity pools,
and biomorphic forms are integrated into the ceiling plane
throughout the common areas. The Parkroyal has been the
recipient of more than 15 design and hospitality awards
since its completion in 2013.
