Save The Ailing Earth

 The Earth as an ecosystem is changing. More carbon

dioxide is now in the atmosphere than has been in the
past 650,000 years. This carbon stays in the
atmosphere, acts like a warm blanket, and holds in the
heat — hence the name ‘global warming.’
 Nowadays, we've overloaded the atmosphere with
heat-trapping gasses from our cars and factories and
power plants. If we don't start fixing the problem now,
we’re in for devastating changes to our environment.
We will experience extreme temperatures, rises in sea
levels, and storms of unimaginable destructive fury.
 Scientists have determined that a number of human activities are
contributing to global warming by adding excessive amounts of
greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such as
carbon dioxide accumulate in the atmosphere and trap heat that
normally would exit into outer space.

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

 Human activity has been a major contributor to climate change
since the start of the Industrial in the mid-1700s.
Scientists predict an increase in sea levels worldwide due to the melting of
two massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland. However, many
nations around the world will experience the effects of rising sea levels,
which could displace millions of people. One nation, the Maldives, is
already looking for a new home, thanks to rising sea levels.
The severity of storms such as hurricanes and cyclones is increasing.
Scientists have come up with the firmest evidence so far that global
warming will significantly increase the intensity of the most extreme
storms worldwide. The maximum wind speeds of the strongest tropical
cyclones have increased significantly since 1981. And the upward trend,
thought to be driven by rising ocean temperatures, is unlikely to stop at
any time soon.
Climate change is expected to have the most severe impact on water
supplies. Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production, reduce
sanitation, hinder economic development and damage ecosystems. It
causes more violent swings between floods and droughts. - Guardian:
Global warming causes 300,000 deaths a year.
According to research published in Nature, by 2050, rising temperatures
could lead to the extinction of more than a million species.

“Climate change now represents at least as great a threat to the number of

species surviving on Earth as habitat-destruction and modification.” Chris
Thomas, conservation biologist at the University of Leeds
A report on coral reefs from WWF says that in a worst case scenario, coral
populations will collapse by 2100 due to increased temperatures and ocean
acidification. The ‘bleaching’ of corals from small but prolonged rises in
sea temperature is a severe danger for ocean ecosystems, and many other
species in the oceans rely on coral reefs for their survival.

Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.

Inflate Your Tires

Keep the tires on your car adequately inflated. Check them monthly.

Change Your Air Filter

Check your car's air filter monthly.

Fill the Dishwasher

Run your dishwasher only with a full load.

Use Recycled Paper

Make sure your printer paper is 100% post consumer recycled paper. Save 5 lbs. of
carbon dioxide per ream of paper.
Change the AC Filter
Clean or replace dirty air conditioner filters as recommended.

Buy Products Locally

Buy locally and reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to your
store.

Buy Energy Certificates

Help spur the renewable energy market and cut global warming pollution by buying
wind certificates and green tags.

Buy Minimally Packaged Goods

Less packaging could reduce your garbage by about 10%. Save 1,200 pounds of
carbon dioxide.

Buy a Fuel Efficient Car

Getting a few extra miles per gallon makes a big difference. Save thousands of lbs. of
CO2 and a lot of money per year.
Carpool When You Can
Own a big vehicle? Carpooling with friends and co-workers saves fuel. Save 790 lbs. of
carbon dioxide and hundreds of dollars per year.

Don't Idle in Your Car

Idling wastes money and gas, and generates pollution and global warming causing
emissions. Except when in traffic, turn your engine off if you must wait for more than
30 seconds.

Reduce Garbage
Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass. Save 1,000
lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.

Plant a Tree
Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breathe. Save 2,000 lbs. of
carbon dioxide per year.
