GETTING TO

KNOW
JESSICA
DAVIS
Tydelia Hunt, NCAT Counseling Center Intern
WHAT IS THERE TO KNOW ABOUT
JESSICA DAVIS?

• Jessica Davis is a 20-year-old Junior at NCAT. She majors in sports

medicine with goals of being a Physical Therapist.
• She has come into the center with presenting concerns around time
and stress management as well as seeking assistance for self-care.
• J. Davis goals of counseling is to learn how to manage stress and
time while also creating a self-care routine.
WHAT IS THERE TO KNOW ABOUT
JESSICA DAVIS?

• Multicultural Differences:
– Different experiences within our life. No two people have the same
experiences.
– We both identify as African American females in our 20s.
• We’ve established a therapeutic alliance through our engagement of
learning about each other during our first few sessions. She gave me an
idea of who she was by providing me with information about herself.
CCAPS-62 & -34

• J. Davis presented with symptoms of worry, stress, sleep difficulties, lack

of concentration/motivation, depressed mood.
• During J. Davis intake session, the CCAPS-62 was taken. The CCAPS-62
showed a concern for academics, generalized anxiety and social anxiety.
• As the sessions continued, J. Davis took the CCAPS-34 before the start of
the personal sessions and with each session there was a decrease in her
concerns.
• She presented stressed out due to academics and not having time to
complete assignments or to keep up with assignments.
INTERVENTIONS USED WITH J.
DAVIS

• During my time with J. Davis, I have used motivational interviewing,

mindfulness, and psycho-education.
– Motivational Interviewing: a counseling method that helps people resolve
ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to
change their behavior.
– Mindfulness: the awareness and ability to comprehend ones own self of
existence in society and their surroundings.
– Psycho-Education: an evidence-based therapeutic intervention for patients and
their loved ones that provides information and support to better understand and
cope with illness.
J. DAVIS DIAGNOSIS

• I diagnosed J. Davis with adjustment disorder because she came in

with presenting concerns around stress and time management. She
stated that she was having a hard time adjusting to the many roles
that she has taken on. J. Davis is an assistant student coach with
NCAT football team, a Resident Advisor (RA), a student intern, a
student, and an employee at SpareTime.
THEORY THAT WORKS BEST WITH
ADJUSTMENT DISORDERS
• Based on the diagnosis that was given, I’ve learned that Psychotherapy is the best
intervention to use.
– Psychotherapy focuses upon goal-oriented activities and psychoeducation about
possible causes of stress, reframing stressful situations, and developing new
coping strategies.
• Brief Dynamic Therapy: helps people identify what behaviors, thoughts, and
feelings are contributing to their present difficulties in coping with their
present situation.
• Supportive Therapy: concentrates on helping people reason through their
thoughts and emotions to get back control in their lives. Focuses on resolving
feelings about the stressful situation or event, decreasing symptoms, and
building the skills necessary to adapt and cope with the situation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Relaxation Techniques can also be

helpful to alleviate ongoing symptoms and stress.
J. DAVIS RESPONSE TO
INTERVENTIONS
• J. Davis responded well to the interventions used. As we practiced
mindfulness (deep breathing exercises and guided meditation), she stated
how “centered” she felt. This eventually led the client to incorporate it into
her self-care routine. She has now become a yoga instructor at NCAT.
• As I provided psych-education on stress and time management, the client
concern with academics has improved. She is doing well.
• J. Davis has shown many improvements within her time at the counseling
center.
When working with J. Davis and thinking
of the multicultural differences, I was eager
to work with her. I’ve always been the type
to be into my academics. The client seemed
to be struggling with academics.

Building rapport with the client has been

REFLECTION something well that I have done with her.
Assessing her needs and assisting her with
stress and time management tips has been
something I’ve done well.

There is nothing that I would have done

differently with J. Davis. She is doing
wonderful.

Transformative Questions:

1. When working with clients who

come in for self-care tips, what
could be a different approach that
I could take?
2. What steps do you use to assist
clients who presents with simple
problems?
