INTRODUCTION
The word ` communication` is derived from
latin words `communis`which means
common..
Derived from the Greek word
“communicare” or “communico” which
means “to share”.

It is a process of exchange of facts, ideas,


opinions, and a means that individual or
organizations shared the meaning and
understanding with one another.
DEFINITION
 Communication is sharing of ideas and
feelings in a mood of mutuality

 Exchanging information regarding health
 Maintenance of health records and to receive
correct reports
 Maintaining continuous public contact

 Publicizing health policies, actions and activities


and to remove any rumours
 Obtaining feedback from community or health
workers
 Making health education effective

 Encouraging cooperation ,coordination good
personal relations among health workers. 
OBJECTIVES
 To discourage the spread of misinformation ,
rumors etc.
 To foster attitude , which is necessary for
motivation , cooperation and job satisfaction
 To provide information and understanding
among all worker for group effort
 To prepare workers for a change in method of
environment by giving them necessary
information in advance
 To encourage subordinates to supply ideas
and suggestion for improving product and
work environment
IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION
 Helps to generate trust between the nurse
and client
 It is the foundation of relationship between
nurse and other member of the health team
 It is vital for decision making purpose

 Communication provides basis for leadership

ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION

 CONTEXT: It is the circumstances that form
the setting for an event, statement or idea .
Context is very important. If you are a
speaker and don't understand your audience,
your message will not come across with
widespread reception. If you are a recipient
of a message and you cannot figure out a
message because your vocabulary is limited,
you miss out on the entire meaning of a
message.
ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
 SENDER/ ENCODER: sender/ encoder is a
person who sends the message . a sender
makes use of symbols (words, graphic, visual
aids) to convey the message and produce the
required response.

 ENCODING: The process of conversion of


subject matter into symbols is called
encoding. The message or subject matter of
any communication is always intangible .
transmission of message requires use of
certain symbols.

 MESSAGE: message is a key idea that the
sender wants to communicate . it must be
ensured that the main objective of the
message is clear.

 MEDIUM: A medium is a channel or system of


communication and it is transmitted between
a speaker or writer(the sender) and an
audience (the reciever) such as newspaper,
radio,or television.

 RECIPIENT/ DECODER: recipient / decoder is a
person for whom the message is intended
/aimed/ targeted. The degree to which the
decoder understands the message is
dependent upon various factors such as
knowledge of recipient , their responsiveness
to the message. 14
 DECODING: It is the process of translation of
an encoded message or printed words into a
sounds or ordinary understandable language .
convert a coded message into intelligible(able
to be understood only by the intellect, not by
the senses) language.

 FEEDBACK: Feedback is the main component
of communication process as it permits the
sender to analyse the efficacy of the
message . It helps the sender in confirming
the correct interpretation of message by the
decoder. Feedback may be verbal through
words or non verbal inform of smile, etc . It
may take written form also in form of memos

stages of communication as:
