Separating Study Tables in A. Glenn Hill    Michael Bennett          Mark Cameron
Problem Statement
Currently the tables on the first floor of A. Glenn Hill Building (STEM Building)
have four seats around them. The trend is that one student will take a spot at this
table, while the rest of the spots remain vacant. Whether it be a “Midwestern
Personality” or a privacy aspect, students do not sit at these vacant spots, but rather
search for an empty table. This leads to most tables in the STEM Building only
being utilized to 25%. (Baird Site Visit, 2020).
Conceptual Designs
 Square Separating Tables
A concept looked at that utilized the most
space available. It just divides up the normal
four-person group table into individual
tables. It also works if only a group of two
was wanted, and its functionality is the best
out of the designs. Ultimately chose this
because of space utilization.
 Trapezoidal Separating Tables
A concept looked at to give possible
pairing options. Instead of placing all four
tables together only two would need to be
put together if in a smaller group. If in
large group could place all four tables
together to give a table about the size of
current STEM building tables.
Diamond Separating Tables
A concept looked at that gave about the
same space utilization as the square tables
but with an open middle part that could be
used for cables and cords. This was
decided against because of potential waste
in manufacturing and it does not have as
good of functionality as the square tables.
Final Design CAD Assembly Project Outcomes
• The outcome of this project is to utilize space that otherwise goes unused in the
STEM Building.
• The Separating Tables would provide people with more study room without feeling
like they are invading people's personal space or bothering them while they are
studying.
• Through our design, we believe more students will utilize the study space in the main
halls and have more productive study time.
Constraints
The design constraints for this project are as follows
• Size- four tables together can be no bigger in total size than existing tables
• Cost, tables need to be approximately ¼ the cost of existing tables
• Lifespan, the life of our tables needs to be at least that of the existing tables
• Ease of use, these tables need to be functional and easily usable

Existing Tables Separating Study Tables
• Size- 4 feet by 4 feet by 30 inches tall • Size- 2 feet by 2 feet by 29 inches tall
• Cost- similar online products at MSRP each, combined to give 4 feet by 4 feet
$400-600 (School Outfitters, 2020) by 29 inches tall table
• Lifespan- under normal use conditions
• Cost- estimated cost MSRP $450

Conclusion
Through observation and research, it can be seen that the STEM Building can use a new
design of tables that lend more towards people with a more introverted personality. As it
currently stands, there is a lot of wasted space in the STEM building. With the limited
private rooms and sofas without writing space, the demand is high for new study areas,
but supply is low for tables to be used. By removing the large tables and replacing them

environment. We believe that these new tables will give more study options in the
STEM building without making people feel uncomfortable.
