The Effect of

Concentration of
Solute on Osmotic
Pressure
HYPOTHESIS
The experimenters believe that
concentration of solute affects the
osmotic pressure of the solution,
that is the measure of tendency of
water to move by osmosis across a
selectively permeable membrane.
According to VanPutte, et. al (2019),
osmosis is the diffusion of water across
a selectively permeable membrane
from a region of higher water
concentration to one of lower water 2
HYPOTHESIS
Factors like temperature, surface area,
difference in water potential, pressure,
and concentration gradient affects the
rate of osmosis (APEC, 2013).
Furthermore, the concentration of
solutions (the water potential) can
affect rate of osmosis as more
differences between the
concentrations of the solutions means
a steeper concentration gradient,
meaning a faster rate of osmosis 3
HYPOTHESIS
There is a presence of concentration
gradient between the solution inside
the thistle tube and the solution in the
beaker. The solution inside the thistle
tube contains more solute or in other
words "more concentrated" than the
solution outside it. Thus, the
experimenters also believe that in
the experiment, the solution
inside the thistle tube will have
an increased level after some 4

EXPERIMENTATION
PROCEDURE
1. Cover the large end of the thistle tube
with cellophane and tie using a rubber
band.

2. Fill the bowl of the tube about 10cm

with a 30% sugar solution. Suspend the
thistle tube in a 500ml beaker with
distilled water

3. Measure with a ruler the level of sugar 6

CONCLUSIONS
- The concentration gradient affects the
osmotic pressure of the solution, that is, the
measure of tendency of water to move by
osmosis across a selectively permeable
membrane.

- The solution inside the thistle tube will

have an increased level after some time due
to osmosis.
