WELLNESS
WHAT IS HEALTH?
"a state of complete physical, mental and
social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity“ (World
Health Organization, 1946).
WHAT IS HEALTH?
“Health typically refers to the overall
condition of the body or mind, and the
presence and absence of illness and
injury” (Fahey, Insel, Roth, 2011).
WHAT IS HEALTH?
”the condition of being well or free from disease”
(Merriam-Webster dictionary).

INFECTIOUS DISEASE – a disease that is


communicable, and is caused by microorganisms
such as virus and bacteria.
HYPOKINETIC DISEASE
• Chronic, non-communicable condition that is
associated with lack of physical activity.
• Also called LIFESTYLE DISEASE
WHAT IS HEALTH?
“Optimal well-being that contributes to one’s
quality of life. It is more than the freedom of
disease and illness, though freedom from disease
is important to good health.
• Optimal health includes high level mental,
social, emotional, spiritual, and physical
wellness within the limits of one’s heredity and
personal abilities” (Corbin, et. al.,2013).
WHAT IS WELLNESS?
“Optimal health and vitality, encompassing
the six dimensions of well-being”
(Fahey, Insel and Roth, 2011).

“Wellness is the positive component of


optimal health” (Corbin, 2013).
WHAT IS WELLNESS?
WELLNESS IS A RELATIVELY NEW CONCEPT
THAT EXPANDS OUR IDEA OF HEALTH AND
REFERS TO LIVING THE LIFE TO ITS
FULLEST. IT CAN ALSO BE REFERRED TO A
POSITIVE STATE OF MIND.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS TODAY IS NOW
USED INTERCHANGEABLY.

HEALTH – can be determined or influence by


factors beyond our control – genes, age, family
history.

WELLNESS – determined by the decisions you


make on how we live; rising above the limits of
what you are expected to do.
DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS
PHYSICAL WELLNESS
• Ability to function effectively in
meeting the demands of everyday
living.
• Taking responsibility and utmost
care for the physical body.
• Ability to make sound choices to
avoid illnesses and injuries.
EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
• Ability to cope with daily
circumstances, and to deal with
pressures in a positive manner.
• Being aware, and accepting
one’s feelings and emotions.
• Accepting limitations, ability to
effectively cope up with stress,
and positive attitude towards
life.
INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS
• Ability to learn and use
information to enhance
quality of everyday living.
• encourages creative,
stimulating mental activities.
• Keeping an open-mind and
seeking new ideas.
• Open to learning, and
constantly challenging their
mind.
INTERPERSONAL/SOCIAL WELLNESS
• Ability to interact, develop
and maintain supportive and
satisfying relationships.
• Positive interactions to other
individuals.
• Participating in, and
successfully contributing to
the needs of the community.
SPIRITUAL WELLNESS
• Ability to establish a value
system and act on a
system of beliefs.
• Having a guiding
principle and philosophy.
• Finds meaning and
purpose in ones existence.
OCCUPATIONAL WELLNESS
• Ability to finding fulfillment in
ones job; enjoyment in work.
• Gain personal satisfaction and find
enrichment in one's life through
work.
• Feels a connection with the people
in the workplace, and has
opportunities to learn and be
challenged.
FINANCIAL WELLNESS
• Ability to spend not
more than the limits of
income.
• Save for emergency
needs.
ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS
• Ability to take care of the
environment.
• Protecting one’s self
against environmental
hazards.
• Contributing to make
the world a clean and
safe place.
