to create tonal
shading.

work each stroke in
one direction only,
rather than scrubbing
back and forth.

6. Scumbling Painting Technique Scumbling is the rough


and uneven application of
a layer of thin paint over a
layer of another color,
producing a lively and
unpredictable texture and
color variety.
Scumbles are usually
applied with a circular
motion of the brush, but
the effect can also be
achieved with streaks,
dabs, or smudges.
