COPLANAR NON - CONCURRENT FORCE
SYSTEM

Coplanar Non-concurrent Force System:-

This is the force system in which lines of action of individual forces

lie in the same plane but act at different points of application .
• Simply put, all of the lines of action of the forces in this system do not meet at one
point.
F1 F2
• The parallel force system was a special case of this type.

• Since all of these forces are not entirely parallel,F5 F3 can

the position of the resultant
be established using F3 the graphical or algebraic methods ofF4 resolving co-planar
forces

Moment Of A Force :-
The moment of a force is equal to the product of the force and the
perpendicular distance of line of action of force from the point about
which the moment is required.
M=PxX
Here, M = moment
P = Force
X = Perpendicular distance between the line of action of
force and the point about which moment is required.
Unit of moment is N.m. or kN,m.
 Examples of moment are :-
i) To tight the nut by spanner
ii) To open or close the door
 Sign for moment:-
Generally, clockwise moment is taken as positive and anticlockwise
moment is taken as negative.
TYPES OF MOMENT

• There are two types of moment

1. Clockwise moment
2. Anti –clockwise moment

Unit of moment is N.m. Or kN. m.

COUPLE:-
Two equal and opposite forces whose lines of action are different
form a couple. Resultant or net force of couple is zero. Hence, couple acting
on a body do not create any translatory motion of the body. Couple
produces only rotational motion of the body.
• Types of couple:
There are two types of couple.
i ) Clockwise couple
ii) Anticlockwise couple
Clockwise couple:-
 It rotates the body in
clockwise direction.
 It is taken as positive.
Anticlockwise couple:-
 It rotates the body in
anticlockwise direction.
 It is taken as negative.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A COUPLE :-
I. The algebraic sum of the forces, forming the couple is zero.

II. The algebric sum of the moment of the forces, forming the couple, about any
point is the same and equal to the moment of the couple itself.

III. A couple cannot be balanced by a single force, but can be balanced only by a
couple, but of opposite nature.

IV. If number of coplanar couples are acting on the body, the they can be reduced to
a single couple, whose magnitude will be equal to the algebraic sum of moment
of all the couples.
VARIGNON’S PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS

It states,

If number of coplanar forces are acting simultaneously on a particle, the

algebraic sum of the moments of all the forces about any point is equal to the
moment of their resultant force about the same point.
PROOF
• To prove this theorem, consider the force R acting in the plane of the
body shown in Fig. . The forces P and Q represent any two
nonrectangular components of R. The moment of R about point O is
M0= r × R
• Because R = P+Q, we may write r × R = r × (P +Q)
• Using the distributive law for cross products, we have
M0 = r × R = r × P + r × Q
• Which says that the moment of R about O equals the sum of the
moments about O of its components P and Q . This proves the
theorem.
• Varignon's theorem need not be restricted to the case of two
components, but it applies equally well to three or more where we
take the clockwise moment sense to be positive.
