CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

PSYCHOMOTOR ACTIVITIES:
BACKGROUND AND
RATIONALE
The development of mathematical skills can be seen as a
central cognitive attribute in a modern technological society.
Successful acquisition of basic mathematical skills early in life
provides framework which later academic achievements are
based upon (Duncan et al., 2007). Consequently, it is important
to identify strategies to improve mathematical skill acquisition
in children and to explore the mechanisms involved in the
acquisition of academic skills.
BACKGROUND AND
RATIONALE
An emerging line of research has focused on investigating the
relationships between physical activity, cognitive functions and
academic achievements in children (Diamond and Ling, 2016).
It indicates that physical activity can benefit cognitive functions
and improve children’s academic performance. Thus, the CI
team aims to come up with a project that would demonstrate
the effects of classroom-based integrated gross and fine motor
learning activities on the mathematical performance of the
Grade 7 students.

Basing on the data we have gathered, the subject

mathematics garnered the highest number of failures
from the first quarter up to the third quarter.
The data that shows low academic performance of
Grade 7 students on most of their subjects, especially in
mathematics, had struck the attention of the teachers
in Cambagahan National High School following its
significant effect on the school’s achievement rate. To
address this matter, the school’s CI team came up with
a plan of possible interventions to hopefully alleviate
and improve the situation.
PSYCHOMOTOR ACTIVITIES:

Aims to improve the academic
performance of Grade 7 students on
mathematics through integrating
classroom-based gross and fine motor
learning activities.
