5 Relationship between Ratios, Rates and


Proportions, with Percentages, Fractions and
Decimals

•A percentage is a fraction with a


denominator of 100.
Examples:
1. In a class, the ratio of the number of
girls to the number of boys is 7 : 3. Find the
percentage of the boys in the class.
Solutions:
The ratio of the number of boys to the total
number of students = 3 : 10

2. Zamri wants to save 10% of his daily pocket
money. Find the ratio of his daily savings to his
total daily pocket money received.
Solutions:
The percentage of Zamri’ daily savings
= 10%

pocket money received = 10 : 100
= 1 : 10
Determine the percentage of a quantity
by applying the concept of proportions
• A proportion is a relationship that states that
two ratios are equal.
Examples:
1. Determine the percentage of each of the following
quantities by applying the concept
of proportions.
a) A box contains 5 balls. Two of the balls
are red. What is the percentage of red balls
in the box?
Solutions:

5 x x = 2 x 100

x = 40
b) Jenny has RM200. She spends RM10 for her
transport fee. What is the percentage of the
amount of money she spends?
Solutions:

Jenny spends 5% of the total amount of money.
