Fluid mechanics

Unit 1
What is mean by fluid mechanics?

• The term Fluid literally means Things which

can flow.
• Technically fluid means gas or liquid.
• Fluid mechanics in simple terms means study
of flow of gases or liquids.
Fluid mechanics in everyday life

• Simple process of inhaling and exhaling air.

• Circulation of blood inside human body.
• Experiencing less air at high altitude.
Engineering applications

• Sprinkling water on lawn.

• Transport of gas and oil by pipelines.
• Submarine moving under water.
Why marine cadets need to study Fluid mechanics?

• Marine engineering operations deals extensively with

different fluids inside engine room.
eg. HFO, LO, Production and transport of steam etc.
• - Liquid and gaseous cargo loading and unloading
needs a good knowledge of fluid mechanics.
A brief history of fluid mechanics

• When human being started to settle in colonies they needed to

transport water for household and irrigation purposes.
• With the invention of ship more understanding of fluid
mechanics was needed.
• Many scientists started experimenting and Hydraulics originated.
• Hydraulics is more concerned with the practical and experimental
part of fluid mechanics.
• Later scientists realized many things simply cannot be explained
by experiments. Strong theoretical explanation is needed for
some phenomena. So the branch of hydrostatics originated.
• Hydrostatics is mainly concerned with the theoretical and
mathematical part of fluid flow.
Fluid mechanics in technical terms

Earlier fluid mechanics was defined as the study of

flow of gases and liquids.
Fluid mechanics is the branch of science that deals
with the behavior of fluids( gases and liquids).
Fluid mechanics is the study of the physical laws that
govern or control the behavior of fluid.
Fluid mechanics is divided in 3 parts:
Fluid statics: Study of fluids at rest.
Fluid kinematics: Study of fluid in motion neglecting
the pressure forces.
Fluid dynamics: Study of fluids in motion considering
the pressure forces.
