Symbols
 A symbol is a short notation of element.
 A symbol represents the name of an
element, an atom of the element and
atomic mass of the element.
 Eg.H=symbol of Hydrogen
 an atom of Hydrogen
 the mass of Hydrogen atom(1amu)
 Amu=Atomic mass unit.

Formulae
(A) For molecules
 Elements (Molecular formulae of
elements)
 Compound (Molecular formulae of
compounds)
 A molecular formula is a short notation
representing a molecule of a substance
which may be an element or a
compound.It shows the number of
atoms contained in a molecule.

(B) Empirical formula and molecular Formula

 The empirical formula is the formula

represents the relative number of atoms of
each kind presents in a molecule of a given
compound. Empirical formula of benzene is
CH.
 The molecular formula of a compound is
the formula which shows the actual
numbers of atoms of each kind presents in
a molecule of the compound.Molecular
formula of benzene is C6H6.

(C)A formula
 A molecule of a element, in which case it is
usually called a molecular formula.
 A molecule of a molecular compound and
may also be referred to as the molecular
formula.
 The simplest unit of a non-molecular
compound (i.e., compound of giant
structure).
 The molecular mass or formula mass of the
corresponding substance.

EQUATION
A chemical equation is used to
represent a chemical reaction.
The process of undergoing a chemical
change is called a chemical reaction.
There are two types of chemical
equations.They are
(a) Equation in words,and
(b) Equation in symbols.

22.10.2019 7
(A) Equation in words and equation in
symbols
 The name of the reactants are written on
the left- hand side of the equation and
the names of the products on the right-
hand side of the equation.
 An equation in symbols describes the
reactants and the products in terms of
chemical symbols and formulae.

22.10.2019 8
(B)Steps in writing chemical equations
 (a) Write the word equation.
 (b) Write the symbol equation.
 (c) Balance the equations.

22.10.2019 9
(C)Why is the equation balanced?
 According to the law of conservation of
Mass, the total mass of the reactants is
equal to the total mass of the
products.Therefore the number of the
atoms of each element before and after
the reaction must also be equal. For this
reason it is necessary to write the
balanced equation.

22.10.2019 10
(D) What does the equation express?
 A chemical equation describes
 (a) the reactants,which are the
substances that take part in the reaction.
 (b) the products which are the substances
that are produced in the reaction.
 (c) the rearrangement of the atoms during
the reaction.
 (d) the weight relationship of the reactants
and the products.

22.10.2019 11
(E)Three types of writing chemical
equation emphasis!
 In writing chemical equation is usually
placed on;
 (a) writing a balanced chemical
equation.
 (b) mentioning the conditions for the
reaction to take place and
 (c) disclosing the physical states of the
reactants and products.
