This document discusses different types of environmental stress and how humans adapt to them. It covers cold stress, heat stress, and altitude stress. For each type of stress, it describes the physiological effects, ways people can mitigate the stress, and evolutionary adaptations certain populations have developed. The key adaptations discussed are developments in thermoregulation, sweat rate, oxygen respiration, and blood circulation that allow some groups to thrive in harsh, high-altitude or extreme temperature environments.

SHARMA (2ND YR –A 35618001618) COLD STRESS Cold stress occurs by driving down the skin temperature, and eventually the internal body temperature. When the body is unable to warm itself, serious cold-related illnesses and injuries may occur, and permanent tissue damage and death may result. HOW PEOPLE NEGETES THIS STRESS? Planning for work in cold weather is the most important defense in preventing cold stress. Wearing appropriate clothing and being aware of how your body is reacting to the cold are important to preventing cold stress. Avoiding alcohol, certain medications and smoking can also help to minimize the risk. POLAR ADAPTATION DUE TO COLD STRESS The extreme Arctic climate makes the region a forbidding place to travel and a challenging place to live. Even so, people have found ways to explore and live in the Arctic.
Arctic native peoples lived primarily from
hunting, fishing, herding, and gathering wild plants for food, although some people also practice farming, particularly in Greenland. Northern people found many different ways to adapt to the harsh Arctic climate, developing warm dwellings and clothing to protect them from frigid weather. HEAT STRESS Heat stress is an illness that can be caused by exposure to extreme heat. It occurs when the body is unable to maintain a healthy temperature in response to a hot environment. Workers who are constantly exposed to high temperatures or an otherwise hot environment may be at risk for developing heat stress. HOW PEOPLE NEGETES THIS STRESS? Wear loosefitting, lightweight clothing. Protect against sunburn. Drink plenty of fluids. Take extra precautions with certain medications. ADAPTATION DUE TO HEAT STRESS Humans in Central Africa have been living in similar tropical climates for at least 40,000 years, which means that they have similar thermoregulatory systems. A study done of South Africa showed that Bantus have a lower sweat rate than that of acclimated and nonacclimated whites. A similar study done on Aboriginal Australians produced similar results, with Aboriginals having a much lower sweat rate than whites. ALTITUDE STRESS Species that undertake altitudinal migrations are exposed to a considerable seasonal variation in oxygen levels and temperature. Cold temperature and low oxygen level present severe challenges for organisms living at high elevations. The strong selection pressures posed by these harsh conditions have resulted in the evolution of key adaptations for hypoxia resistance, cold tolerance and enhanced metabolic capacity in many mammals and birds HOW PEOPLE NEGETES THIS STRESS? Eat carbs Avoid alcohol Drink water Sleep lower Medication ADAPTATION DUE TO HIGH ALTITUDE High-altitude adaptation in humans is an instance of evolutionary modification in certain human populations, including those of Tibet in Asia, the Andes of the Americas, and Ethiopia in Africa, who have acquired the ability to survive at extremely high altitudes. This adaptation means irreversible, long- term physiological responses to high-altitude environments, associated with heritable behavioral and genetic changes. While the rest of the human population would suffer serious health consequences, the indigenous inhabitants of these regions thrive well in the highest parts of the world. These people have undergone extensive physiological and genetic changes, particularly in the regulatory systems of oxygen respiration and blood circulation, when compared to the general lowland population THANK YOU… By priyanshi sharma
