Entrance

Before being built - site area

The time when it was being built, there was a major boom of skyscrapers .hence the broadcasting
tower faced barrier in their way . therefore cn tower was introduced in the place

Total cost-$63000000(today- $350000000)

The main pod works as the attraction for tourists.it consist of revolving restaurant and 2
observatories.

The sky pod has 1 observatory and above that VHF transmitter for broadcasting.

construction

Concept

Construction begin in February 1973 and took 3yrs and 4 months to complete.
Plan being Y-shaped with 3 wing to support the 3 legs of the tower.

Primary aim of the foundation is to support the following caused by

wind pressure.

1. Self-weight
1 2. Turning moment
2
3 3. Shear forces
More than 56 metric tonnes of earth excavated to build construction.

The pressure applied on the bedrock is 575kPa.

Rather than giving a rectangulare shape to foundation , it was preffered to taper the foundation in
order to reduce the shear stress applied on the edges

Spreading forces

Tensile stress

Compressive stress

Cn tower was goinig to be built below the sea level , hence to avoid the cracking of rcc foundation
part pre-stressed concrete was used to build foundation
Above figure show the cable laid in foundation

48 High strength steel cables were used and laid in such way that it provided equivalent compressive
force[C] in the centre.

The shaft were made hollow called cavern to avoid heat gain and to make it accessible for workers
through access holes.

Used in just foundation part

Plan at different levels

Every thing is geometrical in shape except tapered edges in foundation

The shape allows to balance gravitational force nd wind load

Circular crossection was best for structural efficiency but to provide a asthetic view for visitor

Y shaped design was created to assemble elevators for the visitor to take a view while going up and
down
Displacement of thinner part due to wind force and earthquake
Hence tower was made pre stressed to overcomw these forces

Post tensioning system.
