INDUSTRY
REVOLUTION 1.0
In the 1800s, water- and steam-powered
machines were developed to aid
workers.As production capabilities
increased, business also grew from
individual cottage owners taking care of
their own — and maybe their neighbors’
— needs to organizations with owners,
managers and
employees serving customers.
Industrial Revolution
By2.0
the beginning of the 20th century, electricity
became the primary source of power. It was easier to
use than water and steam and enabled businesses to
concentrate power sources to individual machines.
Eventually machines were designed with their own
power sources, making them more portable. This
period also saw the development of a number of
management programs that made it possible to
increase the efficiency and effectiveness of
manufacturing facilities. Division of labor, where
each worker does a part of the total job, increased
productivity
INDUSTRY
REVOLUTION 3.0
In the last few decades of the 20th century, the
invention and manufacture of electronic
devices, such as the transistor and, later,
integrated circuit chips, made it possible to
more fully automate individual machines to
supplement or replace operators. This period
also spawned the development of software
systems to capitalize on the electronic
hardware. Integrated systems, such as material
requirements planning, were superseded by
enterprise resources planning tools that enabled
humans to plan, schedule and track product
flows through the factory.
Industry 4.0 presupposes integration of manufacturing
automation and data exchange to encourage innovations and
smart factory. Such factories will be controlled by a virtual
production line that runs systems and monitors and completes
their physical processes. Communicating in real time and
ensuring the quality of its operations,
connected software systems will be running physical
manufacturing automatically. So, it’s quite logic that smaller,

SOPHIA: THE HUMANOID
Sophia is a social humanoid
robot developed by Hong
Kong-based company
Hanson Robotics. Sophia was
first turned on February 14,
2016, and made her first
public appearance at South
by Southwest Festival
(SXSW) in mid-March 2016

I am able to process speech and
have conversations using a natural
language subsystem. I can emulate
more than 60 facial expressions. I
am able to understand

Amazon Alexa, also known simply as Alexa,
is a virtual assistant AI technology developed
by Amazon, first used in the Amazon Echo
smart speakers developed by Amazon
Lab126.
• It is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-
do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing

Cimon or officially CIMON (Crew Interactive Mobile companion) is a head-
shaped AI robot used in the International Space Station. The device is "an AI-
based assistant for astronauts" developed by Airbus and IBM, with funding
from the German Aerospace Center.

CIMON can act as a mobile documentarian, using its onboard video camera
to record experiments and other activities on the Space Station. It’s able to
do so autonomously, too.
• An astronaut can theoretically ask it to navigate to a specific location, take a
photo, then return and show that photo to the astronaut.
What is SDG 9 ?
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9
is centred on three main pillars: industry,
infrastructure and innovation. With 8
targets and 12 indicators, SDG 9 will
certainly have multiple impacts on
forests, forest-based livelihoods and
forest-based economies.
This chapter explores some of the potential implications of this goal as currently
proposed – within the context of forested landscapes – and examines possible
interactions, synergies and trade-offs for implementation. In addition, it explores the
potential implications of alternative socio-economic pathways for forests and forest-
dependent peoples.

We live in the era of constant transformations. Ability to be
flexible and agile is one of the key qualities for success.
Product and process innovation have been altering
manufacturing already for decades. It goes without saying
that the future will witness even more breathtaking
technological disruptions, as research around nanotechnology
and analytics start to impact numerous manufacturing
applications.
