1 VARIABLE AND
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSION
Use Letter to represent variable
■ Variable means the quantities always change according to situation.
■ In other word, variable is quantity that we don’t know the value.
■ So, we use letter like a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j , k… to represent that quantity
(variable)
Example 1:
Ahmad give some amount of money to his mother every month.
Use RM x represent amount of money.

This value of variable fixed or varied?

Fixed = always constant = same Varied = change over time

Derive Algebraic Expression

Example
  1
■ Yusri buys 5 apples which cost x sen each and 8 oranges which cost y sen each. Write an
algebraic expression for the total amount of money that he paid.
Solution :
Total price of apples =
Total price of oranges =
Total amount of money that he paid =
Example 2

■ The age of Nazmi is h years old and Jagjit is k years old whereas the age of Izhar is
twice that of Jagjit. What is the difference in age between Nazmi and Izhar?
Solution :
Nazmi = h years old Izhar = 2 x k = 2k
= h – 2k
Determine the values of algebraic
expressions

Example
  1:
Given that x = 3 and y = 2, find the value of 8x – 5y + 7.

= 24 – 10 + 7
= 21
Example 2

In a class, of the boys are members of Kadet Remaja Sekolah whereas 9 girls are not
members of Kadet Remaja Sekolah.
(a) Write an expression for the total number of members of Kadet Remaja Sekolah in the
class.
(b) If there are 12 boys and 16 girls in the class, calculate the total number of members of
Kadet Remaja Sekolah in the class
Solution: let x is no. of boy students and y is no. of girl student

= 4 +16 – 9
= 21
