PUMPING STATION

23rd April, 2013

Objectives
• At the end of this lecture you will be able:

• To describe the importance of pump priming

• To explain Pumps operating in system

• To differentiate Series connection and Parallel

connection

• Explain what pumping station is

Priming
Priming

• Priming of a centrifugal pump is defined as

the operation in which the suction pipe
casing of the pump and a portion of
delivery pipe up to the derivery valve is
completely filled up with the liquid to be
rised by pump before starting the pump.
Priming
Pumps operating in systems
• A pump is always connected to a system
where it must circulate or lift water.
• The energy added to the water by the
pump is partly lost as friction in the pipe
system or used to increase the head.

• Implementing a pump into a system

results in a common operating point.

Multistage Centrifugal Pumps
• A Centrifugal pumps that consists of two
or more impellers mounted on the same
shaft or different shafts is called the
multistage centrifugal pump.

• Multistage pumps are employed to

accomplish the following two important
functions:
1. To produce a high head
2. To develop a high discharge
Pumps combined in Parallel
• Pumps are connected in parallel to
develop high discharge.
Pumps combined in Parallel
• In this case, 2 single
stage impellers are
arranged back to
back, and in parallel.

• This doubles the

pump flow but the
head stays the
same.
Pumps combined in Parallel

• In systems with large variations in flow and

a request for constant pressure, two or
more pumps can be connected in parallel.
Pumps combined in Parallel
• Parallel-connected pumps are also used
when regulation is required or if an
auxiliary pump or standby pump is needed

• Pumps connected in parallel are e.g. used

in pressure booster systems, for water
supply and for water supply in larger
buildings.
Pumps combined in Series
• Pumps are
connected in
series to develop
high head.

• The discharge
through each
pump is the
same.
Pumps combined in Series

• Liquid discharging at pressure from one

basic impeller [1] is passed to the entry of
another [2]
Pumps combined in Series
Pumps combined in Series

• Centrifugal pumps are not common

connected in serial, but a multi-stage pump
can be considered as a serial connection
of single-stage pumps.

• If one of the pumps in a serial connection

is not operating, it causes a considerable
resistance to the system.
Pumps combined in Series

• If one of the
pumps in a serial
connection is not
operating.

• a bypass with a
non-return valve
could be build-in
Pumping Station
Pumping station

• Pumping station is associated with pipes,

fittings, valves which are normally used in
pressurized flow of water, wastewater and
sludge

• It comprise : Structures
Electrical installation
Pumping station
• The design of a pumping station depends
on several specialties

• planning and water resources

management

• Surveying, Foundation and soils

engineering, Electrical Engineering
Pumping station
• Therefore during the design of Pumping
station is important to understand:

• materials

• Piping

• Fittings, joints and valves

JOINTS

• Buried pipes

• Joints

• Exposed Pipes
JOINTS

• Joints • Exposed Pipes

The most practical connections in exposed

piping are flanged, bolted joints because
they are rigid, cannot be deflected, and can
resist a considerable amount of bending
moment.
JOINTS
• Flanged Joints

• The common joint connection used in the

pumping station is the flanges.
Why Flange connections
are mostly used in pumping
station?
What are types of flange
connection?
