DIRECT/QOUTED SPEECH

Direct speech can also be called as


quoted speech which involves quoting
the exact words uttered by the person,
within inverted commas or quotation
marks.
INDIRECT/REPORTED SPEECH

can also be called as reported speech which


does not have to be within quotes or
reported word – to – word. In fact, unless
one is relaying the exact words spoken,
one should never used quotation marks.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH CAN BE
EXPRESS THROUGH THE FOLLOWING:

1.EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE
2. IMPERATIVE SENTENCE
3. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
1. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE –
EXPRESSES STATE OF JOY OR
SORROW OR WONDER.
EXAMPLE: “WOW, WHAT A NICE
SHIRT IT IS.
DIRECT/QOUTED SPEECH:
1. John said, “What a nice shirt it is”.
INDIRECT/REPORTED SPEECH:
1. John exclaimed with wonder that it was a
nice shirt.
2. IMPERATIVE SENTENCE –
EXPRESSES COMMAND, REQUEST,
ADVICE AND SUGGESTIONS.
EXAMPLE: “PLEASE HELP ME”.

DIRECT/QOUTED SPEECH:
1.He said to me, “Please help me”.
INDIRECT/REPORTED SPEECH:
1. He ask me to help him.
3. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE – IN
CHANGING INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
INTO INDIRECT SPEECH, WE HAVE TO
OBSERVE THE NATURE OF QUESTION AND
THEN CHANGE IT INTO INDIRECT SPEECH
ACCORDING TO ITS RULES.
EXAMPLE: “DID YOU GO TO
SCHOOL?”
DIRECT/QOUTED SPEECH:
1.They said to me, “Did you go to school?”
INDIRECT/REPORTED SPEECH:
1. They asked me if I had gone to school.
