 In this current generation, how important is Internet
for you?
INTERNET
 Is a worldwide, publicly accessible network of
interconnected computer networks that transmit
data by packet switching using the standard
Internet Protocol (IP).
 Web pages are transferred between computers
via HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
HTTPS is used by websites that keeps sensitive
transactions and information safe online.
INTERNET
 It is a network of networks that consists of
millions of smaller domestic, academic,
business, and government networks which
together carry various information and services.
 Web sites are found by their addresses online.
These addresses are called URL or Uniform
Resource Locator.

 Created by Vinton Cerf in 1973
 It was a part of a project headed by Robert Kahn of
the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
 Turned over to private sector & to government
agencies for development

 LAN – Local Area Network
 WAN – Wide Area Network

ITY
 Ability of software programs running on computer
made by different manufacturers to run w/o
incompatibilities.
NET VS WEB
 Internet and World Wide Web is NOT synonymous.
 Internet - international network, networking
infrastructure, connection of computers.
 WWW – system of interlinked, hypertext
documents.
 In other words, the Internet can exist without the
web, but the web cannot exist without the internet.

 Developed by Tim Berners-Lee
 The technology allowed users to click on a
word/phrase in a document to open another
document.
 Web Browsers translates HTML documents and
allows users to navigate other parts of the Internet.
 HTML is the markup language that is used to create
webpages.
 HTML documents contain both information and
markup symbols or codes.

Website – collection of webpages.
Usually hosted in a server accessible
through Internet.

A website address contains a domain name (e.g.


“youtube”) and a domain extension (e.g. “dot
com” or “.com”)
WEBSITE ADDRESS
 A website address contains:
Protocol (HTTP:// or HTTPS://)
Domain Name (Youtube, Facebook, etc.)
Domain Extension
○ .com: commercial domains, now the largest presence
on the Web
○ .org: organization, can be any type of organization
○ .gov: government agency, usually federal, but can be
state
○ .edu: educational institution
○ .net: Internet Service Provider or network

Country Code (.ph, .jp, .uk, etc.)


 Web extensions, also known as top level domain names, are the part of
the URL that specifies what exactly that site is part of (institution,
government, business, country, etc.).

 The most well-known Web extensions are .com, .edu, .net, and .org.

 .com: short for "commercial"; most popular Web extension

 .org: short for "organization"; mostly non-profits, but can be used for any type of
organization

 .gov: short for "government"; usually a federal site, but also can indicate a state site

 .edu: short for "educational"; most domains with an .edu extension are education-
related

 .net: short for "network"; many ISPs (Internet Service Provider) and networks use a
.net extension.
