VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

In India in the earlier years and in the


growing era still women and girl
children are facing many problems or
violence in the society which make them
feel insecure and not stepping out of the
home or the girl child is killed inside the
foetus.

Common types of violence:
Female Foeticide
Female foeticide is the practice of aborting the fetus when
a person finds out that the foetus is a female after
undergoing prenatal test.
Causes of female foeticide
• The desire to have a boy baby
• Parents are scared of girl’s safety from dowry issues and
sexual harassment in the society.
• Most people think a female child cannot proceed with the
father’s family

Causes of female foeticide


• Misusing and corruption of medical
facilities.
Ex: Some doctors involved in ultrasound
test to know the sex and abort the
foetus for money
• Lack of education.

Domestic Violence:
The term Domestic violence refers to abusive behavior
in any personal relationship that allows one partner to
intimate or to gain power and control over the other. Often
this case is occurring by husband and their families to the
women. That is in detail it is thought to occur between
married spouses or in other intimate relationship but
actually refers to any family relationship or persons living
in the same home.

Why violence against women is so common?


• Physically they are weak.
• Gender inequality and discrimination.
• Low level of education.
• Limited economic opportunities.
• Male control over decision- making and assets.
• Low level of awareness about human rights.

Domestic Violence by whom?


This violence happens by parents, husband and his family
members
By the Parents:
Denial of education:
Millions of girls around the world being denied education
because they are exploited, discriminated or ignored by the
parents themselves.

Reasons:
• Due to the economic burden girls often stay home to
take care of the youngest one at home.
• In the male dominated society parents considered male
child only might take the responsibility of the family.
Honor killing : Some parents not accepting their girls for
inter-caste marriage or the male with the lower economic
background so they kill their daughters and justify their
action claiming that the victim has brought “dishonor upon
the family name or prestige”.

Domestic violence by husband and


his family members:
Causes:
1. Acts of jealous, possessiveness or
unfaithfulness
2. Gets angry by consuming alcohol
and using drugs.
3. Dowry.

Types of Violence:
• Physical abuse:
pushing, hitting, slapping, beating, preventing the victim
from leaving the room by locking it, refusing medical help
for the victim, denying basic needs such as eating and
sleeping.
• Verbal abuse:
Shouting, making threats, calling with unwanted names,
humiliating remarks etc.,

Types of Violence:
• Sexual abuse:
forcing intercourse and making her to do sexual things
against her will.
• Economic abuse:
Dowry, forcing to go for work without her concern,
economic deprivation.
• Exercise control over her:
Girls are not permitted to meet her friends, parents and
neighbours.

Effects of Domestic Violence :


• Strained family relation
• Anxiety and depression
• Health problem
• Adequately respond to the needs
of the children
• Self -neglect and suicide.

Problems of working women


Globally 40% of workforce is now women but they face
many challenges inside the family and in the workplace.

Inside the family : It becomes difficult for the working


women for them to maintain work and household chores
equilibrium because of increased responsibility in the
family. Inside the family they suffer from lack of support
from the family members.

Following where the difficulties of working women


inside the family:
1.Domestic responsibility:
A working women especially a married women has to take
up multiple responsibility of looking after her home,
husband and children on the one side and her job on the
other side. This cause a lot of stress and strain on her.

2. Attitude of the spouse and his family :


An overbearing and an egoistic husband could create
tension and stress in the life of a working women.
Economic independence of working women create
conflicts at home. The in-laws in the family make torture in
many ways like doing every household chore, gossiping
and compel her to do personnel works to them. It will
create more burden to the working women also affecting
her children.

3. Sharing domestic burden:


One of the major sources of domestic
conflict in families where both the
spouses work outside is the issue of
sharing domestic responsibilities.
Gender stereotypes that are firmly
embedded in the social psyche have
forced most women to accept soul
responsibility of the family.

4.The nature of economic


obligation:
The question of spending one’s
earning is also a source of conflict
in many families women generally
have limited powers to take
decisions related to their earnings.
It will lead conflict between
working women and their
husband.

At the Workplace
1. Gender bias:
It creates obstacles in their recruitment.
Men think that they are less capable and in-
efficient in working as compared to men. In
addition to this the same attitude governs
injustice of unequal salaries for the same
job working in such condition puts strain on
women.

2.No safety of working women while


travelling:
Sometimes women accept to do work at
night shifts after their working hour in
cities and towns they reach their home
crossing several long distance. This
makes to feel them insecure and anxiety
everyday due to many issues like theft,
sexual harassment and trafficking.

3. Insufficient maternity
issues:
This is another issue faced by
working mother this is not only
affect the performance of women
employees at work but it also
affects their health and the infant
health.

4. Workplace culture:
Adjusting a workplace whether in a work company or not is
intensely stressful. Making oneself adopt to the various
aspects of workspace culture such as communication
patterns of the boss as well as the co-workers can be the
lesson of life. Sometimes women suffer from bad treatment
from her bosses, her customers and from other colleagues.
In many cases office politics or gossips can be major stress
inducers.

5. Sexual harassment:
Today almost all working
women are prompt to sexual
harassment irrespective of
their status (refer sexual
harassment).

6. Workplace gossips:
Workplace gossip is a form of informal communication
among colleagues focused on the private, personnel and
sensitive affairs of others many working women are affected
by the gossips. When a women reached a high and
respectable position crossing so many obstacles but her
ability, efficiency, friendly attitude, harsh behaviors are
gossiped by her colleagues. It makes her emotionally drained
or weak.

Other common workspace issues:


• Bullying and discrimination
• job insecurity, low motivation and
job satisfaction
• communication problems
• inter-personnel conflicts
• security.
