Essential Question: Task(s) of the Day:

How can I classify matter by Take notes on Elements,
its composition? Compounds, and Mixtures
Learning Target: Complete Elements,
By the end of the unit section Compounds, and Mixtures
students will be able to practice.
classify matter by its
composition.
Elements, Compounds, and
Mixtures

You can think of atoms as the building blocks

of matter. Like toy blocks, atoms can be
connected in different ways. Atoms make up
elements and compounds. Elements and
compounds, in turn, make up mixtures.
An atom is like building
block of matter.
An element is made up
of one or more of the
same kind of atom
chemically combined.
A compound is made up
of different kinds of
atoms chemically
combined. Compounds
have different properties
from elements that make
them up.
