WHAT IS A FUNDING AGENCY?

Funding agencies are organizations that provides grants, scholarships, or other forms of


support to programs, projects, and individuals in a specific area. Funding agencies may
be non-profit organizations, private foundations, or government offices .

Where as in the context of social welfare it is to provide financial assistance for the
various plans and projects.

Funding agencies provide support and funding to non-profits, grass-root level NGOs,
organizations, but the agencies provide funds and support according to their own
guidelines, terms and parameters.
THE UNITED NATIONS AND ITS AGENCIES
The United Nations along with its other agencies are
one of the main funding agency for international
welfare organizations.

The UN system, also known unofficially as the 'UN


family', is made up of the UN itself and many
programs, funds, and specialized agencies, all with
their own leadership and budget.  The programs and
funds are financed through voluntary rather than
assessed contributions. The Specialized Agencies are
independent international organizations funded by
both voluntary and assessed contributions.

Apart from the UN, there are a number of various voluntary funding agencies which are run by
individuals and organizations. They are as follows:-

• THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

of the EU.
It provides funding for social welfare and its main focus is on Europe.

• BILL AND MILLINDA GATES FOUNDATION


It is the largest private foundation in the world and has donated more than $36 billion around the
world. India is one of the main functioning unit of this foundation.

• FORD FOUNDATION
Human welfare being the main goal of this foundation, the Ford brothers laid the
stepping stone for this foundation back in 1936. It also has a rich history of
assisting developing countries in times of need.
• OXFAM
Oxfam-Oxford Committee for Famine Relief is a confederation of 20 independent
charitable organizations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty, founded in 1942
and led by Oxfam International. It is a major nonprofit group with an extensive collection
of operations. It’s main focus being the allevation of poverty.

• SWISSAID
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is an office-level
agency in the federal administration of Switzerland, and a part of the Federal
Department of Foreign Affairs. Together with other federal offices, SDC is
responsible for overall coordination of Swiss international development activities
and cooperation with Eastern Europe, as well as humanitarian aid.

• FINDHORN FOUNDATION
The Findhorn Foundation is a Scottish charitable trust registered in 1972, formed
by the spiritual community at the Findhorn Ecovillage, one of the
largest international committees in Britain.
