“A nation is born into freedom on the day when such a people,
moulded into a nation by a process of cultural evolution and
sense of oneness born of common struggle and suffering,
announces to the world that it asserts is natural right to liberty
and is ready to defend it with blood, life, and honor.”

Diosdado Macapagal

Kartilya ng Katipunan

The Kartilya presented its concept of virtuous living

as lessons for self reflection, rather than as direct
prescriptions.

It asserted that it was the internal, not external

qualifications that make human greatness.
Kartilya ng Katipunan

Written more than a hundred years ago at a time

when the idea of nationhood was still a dream, the
Kartilya reflected a vision, “bright sun of freedom in the
islands, spreading its light upon brothers and a race
united.

The Kartilya was about fourteen lessons that serve as

the Katipuneros' guide in living with morals and good
values.
Kartilya ng Katipunan

It was like a code of conduct that shows how to be a

true Filipino in words and action.

The Kartilya shows the path on how to live a

meaningful life for every Filipino.

Each lesson is unique in such a way that it tackles

different aspects of a person's life.
Kartilya ng Katipunan

Many of us may have different explanation and

understanding about it but it is appropriate to have a
better understanding or explanation to its contents.

In light of political status of the government leaders

in the Philippines today, the Kartilya ng Katipunan
serves as crucial role in reminding the Filipinos of their
three major reponsibilities:
I.
Love for God
II.
Love for
Country
III.
Love for
Countrymen
This concept of love shared equally between religion,
patriotism and empathy creates a holistic individual
capable of fulfilling every responsibility as a Filipino--
embodies by the sheer character of love.

Every individual living by this Kartilya is constantly

reminded that love supersedes any individual effort,
creating a nationshood bigger than himself, larger than the
country enveloped by God.
4th Rule of
Kartilya
4
“Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal
superiority in knowledge, cwealth and beauty are to be
understood, but not superiority by nature.”

In Tagalog:
“Maitim man o maputi ang kulay ng balat, lahat ng tao'y
magkakapantay; mangyayaring ang isa'y higitan sa dunong,
sa yaman, sa ganda; ngunit hindi mahigitan sa pagkatao.”
4 This rule highlights EQUALITY. We are all born equal no
matter what race, status, and educational background we
have.

Our society may have divided us into groups but we

must all understand that no one is superior of anyone.

Every Katipunero is treated equally no matter what race

or educational background he has.
4 Equality is about ensuring that every individual
has an equal opportunity to make the most of their
lives and talents.

It is also the belief that no one should have poorer

life chances because of the way they were born,
where they come from, what they believe, or whether
they have disabilities.

Equality recognises that historically certain

groups of people with protected characteristics such
as race, disability, sex and sexual orientation have
experienced discrimination.
4 Equality in social platform despite skin
color like Miss Universe and other pageants where
women have equal rights to represent their
country despite of different races and complexion.

They proved their worth through wit, talent,

confidence and the advocacy they live to. The
women themselves are accepting and welcoming
each other as all have the same goal which is to
show all their beauties for a purpose.
8th Rule of
Kartilya
8
“Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor before the
law or in the field.”

In Tagalog:
“Ipagtanggol mo ang inaapi; kabakahin ang umaapi.”
8 We don’t have the same strengths but we can
help one another. We must choose to fight for what
is right. Fight with the weak people who needs
your help and comfort and fight those people who
keep on putting others down by oppressing them.

The eighth lesson simply tells everyone to fight for what

is right and fight with the persons who is at the right side.
“A Katipunero must protect the weak and fight for those
who oppress the weak.”

countries is one way to put this rule into
application.
12th Rule of
Kartilya
12
“What thou dost desire done unto thy wife, children,
brothers and sisters, that do not unto the wife, chien and
sisters of neighbor.”

In Tagalog:
“Ang hindi mo ibig na gawin sa asawa mo, anak at kapatid,
ay huwag mong gagawin sa asawa, anak at kapatid ng iba.”
12 Don't d o to others what yo u don't want to be
done unto you.It's like a mirror,what yo u d o to
yourself while looking in the mirror will reflect
and will be shown in the mirror too.

Every action that any m a n d o is important.

Every action has its own consequences. We must
not d o bad things against other people if we don’t
want other people to d o bad things against us.
12 It comprises all the rules of the law with regard to man
and all the amplification of those precepts given by the
prophets. It instructs us to put ourselves in our neighbor's
place, and guide our behavior accordingly.

It assumes, of course, that when we put ourselves in our

neighbor's place, we are wise enough not to make any
foolish wishes and good enough not to make any evil ones.
The Rule was a vital emphasis on empathy and the
reciprocity of morality.
12
Put yourself in their shoes. Act only in accordance with
that maxim through which you can at the same time will
that it become a universal law. Don’t create rules for
yourself that you wouldn’t apply to others.”
12
I f y o u don’t want other peo pl e to disrespect
y o u a n d the p eo p l e close to y o u , like for exa m p l e
i n the aspect o f saying fo u l words or eve n acti ons
that shows disrespect, d o no t d o to others a n d
their peers a n d fa m i l y, so that respect will be
g i ven back instead if respect is proper ly showed.
