BASIC?
WHAT IS THIS
GAME?
“IS IT BASIC?” IS A BASIC CALCULUS GAME
SHOW THAT CHALLENGES THE PLAYERS TO
COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHERS USING THEIR
KNOWLEDGE AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS IN
BASIC CALCULUS. IT INVOLVES PROBLEMS IN
LIMITS, EXTREMAS, DERIVATIVES,
ANTIDERIVATIVES, AND INTEGRATION WHICH ACT
AS THE CATEGORIES FOR THE GAMESHOW WITH
EACH HAVING 5 QUESTIONS WITH
CORRESPONDING POINTS WHICH IS BASED FROM
OBJECTIVES
THE GAMESHOW’S OBJECTIVE IS TO
PROVIDE THE PLAYERS CHALLENGE WHEN
IT COMES TO THE SUBJECT BASIC
CALCULUS. IT ALSO PROVIDES PRACTICE TO
CERTAIN BASIC CALCULUS TOPICS WHILE
HAVING FUN AND FRIENDLY COMPETITION
AMONG PLAYERS. THE GAME SHOW ALSO
AIMS TO BE AN INSTRUMENT OF LEARNING
MECHAN
ICS
CAST
OF
CHALLENGERS
CHALLENGERS ARE THE
PLAYERS WHO ARE GOING TO
COMPETE EACH OTHER FOR
GLORY. THE GAME IS LIMITED
TO 4 MAXIMUM
TECHNICALS
TECHNICALS ARE THE PEOPLE
WHO ARE GOING TO MANAGE
THE

THE HOST IS THE GAME
MASTER OF THE DAY WHO WILL
MANAGE THE FLOW OF THE
GAMEPLAY OF THE GAME SHOW.
CHECKERS
CHECKERS ARE THE PEOPLE
WHO ARE GOING TO CORRECT
AND CHECK SOLUTIONS OF THE
CHALLENGERS’ ANSWER
THROUGHOUT THE GAME.
GAMEP
1. THE GAME WILL
START WITH FOUR
CHALLENGERS, A
HOST, TECHNICALS,
2. TO START THE GAME,
THE CHALLENGERS WILL
PICK IN THE LOTTERY WITH
THE NUMBERS 1 – 4 TO
DECIDE WHICH
CHALLENGER GOES FIRST,
3. IF THE ARRANGEMENT
OF THE CHALLENGERS ARE
ALREADY DECIDED AND
ALL OF THINGS ARE
ALREADY SET-UP WE CAN
ALREADY START THE GAME
4. THE FIRST CHALLENGER
WILL HAVE THE CHANCE
TO DECIDE WHICH
CATEGORY AND WHICH
LEVEL OF PROBLEM HE/SHE
IS GOING TO CHOOSE, BUT
5. AFTER PICKING THE
PROBLEM, THE
CHALLENGERS WILL BE
GIVEN EQUAL CHANCES TO
SOLVE BUT THE ONE WHO
WILL GET THE POINTS IS
6. *SPECIAL RULE:
EVERYTIME THE CHALLENGER
PICKS A PROBLEM THE HOST
WILL SAY “IS IT BASIC?” AND
THE CHALLENGERS SHOULD
SAY “IT IS BASIC!”. ALSO, THE
CHALLENGER WHO FINISHES
7. THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE
PLAYERS FROM THE LOTTERY
WILL BE FOLLOWED (IN
PICKING THE PROBLEMS IN
EVERY AFTER PROBLEM)
UNTIL ALL OF THE PROBLEMS

A bicycle manufacturer finds out that his monthly
average cost of manufacturing a bicycle is given by the
function :

What would be his cost if he manufactures 50 bicycles
this month? What is the maximum cost can he achieve?

50
Answer
ANSWER
For 50 bicycles, the value of input x=50. Thus we find the
value of the function as x approaches 50. this can be
done:

= = =0.0113+25 = P25.0113
Thus, the average cost per bicycle when 50 bicycles are
produced, would be P25.0113

50
ANSWER
Answer
Maximum cost occurs when he produces infinitely many bicycles. Thus what we
have to find here is the limit of function C(x) as x approaches infinity. This can be
done as:
= =
 = =
=
= = 200(0) + 25 =P25.00

Question
EXTREMA
g′(x) = x(x+2) (x+4)²

10
Answer
ANSWER Interval Test x-value Conclusion
x< -4 x = -5 f is increasing
g′(x) = x(x+2) -4< x < -2 x = -3 f is increasing

(x+4) -2< x <0

x>0
x = -1
x=1
f is decreasing
f is increasing

f increases before x = -2, then decreases after it.

Critical points So f has a relative maximum point at x = -2
x = -4, x = -2, x = 0 f decreases before x = 0, then increases after it,
So f has a relative minimum point at x = 0.

Question
EXTREMA
f(x) = 3x -20x³
5

20
Answer
ANSWER Interval X-value Conclusion

f(x) = 3x5-20x³ (−∞,−2)

(-2,0)
x = -3
x = -1
f is increasing
f is decreasing
f′(x) = [3x5-20x³] (0,2) x=1 f is decreasing
= 15x4- 60x² (2,∞) x=2 f is increasing

  =15 x²(x²-4)
=15 x²(x+2)(x+2) Maximum point = (-2,64)
Critical points Minimum extrema = (2,-64)
x = 0, x = -2, x = 2

20
Question
EXTREMA
f(x) =

30
Answer
ANSWER Interval Test x-value Conclusion
(−∞,0) X = -1 f is increasing
(0,1) X = 0.5 f is increasing
f(x) = (1,2) X = 1.5 f is decreasing
f′(x) = (2, ∞) X=3 f is increasing

Critical points f increases before x = 0, then decreases after
x = 0, x = 1, x = 2 it. So f has a relative maximum point at x = 0
f decreases before x = 2, then increases after it,
So f has a relative minimum point at x = 2.

30
Question
EXTREMA
f(x) = x³ + 6x² -15x + 2

40
Answer
ANSWER Interval X-value Conclusion

f(x) = x³ + 6x² -15x + 2 (−∞,−5) x = -6 f is increasing

(-5,1) x=0 f is decreasing
f′(x) = [x³ + 6x² -15x + 2] (1,∞) x=2 f is increasing
= 3x² + 18x -15
f is increasing before x = -5, then
  = 3(x² + 4 - 5) decreases after it. So f has a relative
=3(x - 1)(x + 5) maximum point at x = -5
Critical points f is decreasing before x = 2, then
x = -5, x = 1 increases after it. So f has a relative
minimum point at x = 2

40
Question
EXTREMA
Use Second Derivative Test
f(x) = sin x + cos x on [0,2π]

50
Answer
ANSWER
f(x) = sin x + cos x on [0,2π]
f′(x) = 0 at x = π/4 and 5π/4
f″(x) = −sin x −cos x
=f″(π/4) = -√2

Maximum Extrema = (π/4,√2)

Minimum Extrema = (5 π/4, -√2)
