PERCENTAGES
• The word “percent” comes from the two Latin
words 'per' and 'cent' meaning, 'out of every
100' (per hundred).
• The symbol for percent is % .
Trivia:
• A CENTURY is 100 years.
PERCENTAGES
• In percentages, the whole amount equals
100 % .
• So, 20 % means 20 out of 100.
• 100 % can also be written as 100/100 = 1.

Remember: In Mathematics, the term of means
multiply and the term is means equal to.

Example: “12% of 60 is ____” can be written as


12% x 60 = Q.

What is 18% of 300?
Amount = 0.18 x 300
= 54.

So 54 is 18% of 300.
Finding an unknown percent
30 is what percent of 150?

Rate x 150 = 30

Rate = = = 0.20( ) = 20%

So, 30 is 20% of 120.


Finding an unknown base
28 is 40% of what number?

0.40 x base = 28
Base = 28 = 70

So, 28 is 40% of 70.
