imported from alien ground and transferred to the Philippine setting.
 We will be dividing the thought of the content of our references into three parts:

Academic- scientific Psychology

 Found its way to the hilippines primarily through the University of San Carlos
in 1954 and the University of the Philippines in 1920 with the establishment of
the American educational system.
 The Filipino phase of academic –scientific psychology began with the return in
1925 of Filipino pioneers in Western psychology belonging to the pragmatist –
behavioral school which has just then began to distinguish itself from its
European origins mainly by the Germans , English and French traditions.
Academic –Philosophical Psychology

 Traces its roots to the establishments of a system on a higher education at


 the University of Sto.Tomas in Spanish times in about in the middle of the 17 th
century .
Ethnic Psychology

 Otherwise called the katutubong Sikohiya or indigenous psychology


It’s a psychological system worked out by Filipinos from indigenous and foreign elements in
response to their natural and cultural experience.
It includes the study of Filipino Psychology in the context of the Filipino people’s ethnic traits
which may be culled on both native or foreign , mainly Spanish sources . Filipino Psychology
attempts to study psychology in the Philippine context and with a Filipino orientation with the
end view of countering foreigners negative perceptions of Filipino
It involves the study of the Filipino ETHNIC psychology from the early times to the present
times.
Psycho-Medical System

 Is manifested through faith healing connected with the espiritista movement and
techniques of healing through herbolaryo and other indigenous methods
Indigenous Psychological Tradition

 Practices that is purely native . Hence the

 1.Lapu-lapu became an important topic for Filipino oriented psychological research and
study .

the peace and friendship where to be made. .

American Colonial Psychology

 Scientific Psychology in the country was western creation. Which started after
Commodore George Dewey won the mock battle of Manila Bay .
 Psychology , undergraduate level was taught at the College of Education , UP .
 Use American textbooks
 English as medium of instruction.
 THIS was a less decade when the University establish itself in1908 with Murray Bartlett
as the first President.

 Alonzo Agustin
 Underwent American training in advance psychology
 Assumed the psychology chair in UP
 Completed his MA requirements in 1922
 Proceeded to University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D IN Experimental
Psychology . .is thesis was a people-oriented thesis no longer studying the behavior of an
animal but still manage to take care of his animals at the laboratory .
Alonzo Agustin

 Harrison’s Era of Filipinization in 1921 – Personnel Indigeniztion


* was a practical policy for the americans because it cost less to hire a Filipino. Though
some americans were annoyed of the personnel indigenization.
Critical Positions were reserved for the American colonial administrators
Academe chairmanship is not considered a critical position hence paved the way for
Alonzo Agustin to assume the position of Psychology Chair in UP .
End of Harrison’s Era of Filipinization in 1921 was :
a. the beginning of the American oriented Psychology in the Philippines
b. Marked the completion of the first MA Psychology thesis in English written
by Alono
c. Right after the completion of his MA requirements e left for the University of
Chicago to proceed with a Phd in Experimental Psychology.
His efforts that were left unnoticed :
Establishment of the International Center
His pivotal role in early American colonial psychology in the Philippines.
Psicologia

 This term was not unheard even during the time the US Senate ratified the Treaty of Paris
 Infact Sikolohiya derived its name from psicologia
 This term was already apart of the laymen’s vocabulary
 The Spanish Rational Psychology is a form of philosophy appropriate in the realm of
speculative thought.
 Psychological treatises such as that of Delgdo and Plasencia were not meant for the Indios
who called themselves Filipino .
 2 centuries after its founding in 1611 for the University of Santo Tomas to change its
admission policy to accomdate Filipinos.
 President Emilio Aguinaldo certified Del Pilar and Jacinto as certified Psychologist though
they ar not graduate of Psychology .
Sinforoso Padilla

 the first attempt to do local test development


 Authored the Philipine Mental Ability Test
 Leila Padilla his daughter pursued hiswork
 His colleage Manuel Carreon took the cudgels for appropriate and relevant psychological
testing .
 He published in 1926 in New York City his dissertations entitled Philippine Studies in
Mental Development.
 His thesis and arguments were valid but was written in English hence his copies of boos
qualify for the Filipinana hence as placed in the Filipiniana section but not among the
psychology books in the shelf.
 Change apples to papaya refers to the message given by Carreon to modify test items to fit
to the Philippine condition
 Isidoro Panlasiqui
 From Northern Philippines
 Completed his Ph.D in Educational Psychology in IOWA IN 1928 through private
American support . He forgot all about the horrors Balangiga Samar in the 50’s and
identifies himself with the protestant churches American dollar , structure and practices of
amrican colonial education and others.
 His contribution in Psychology can be found in his authentic Ti Agtutubo and Ti Ubing
