DISMANTLING OF
STRUCTURES

SHYAM KHOCHE
A.X.E.N. II
Abstract of Correction Slip No. 3
dated 30.08.01 to IRWM

 When dismantling of any existing

structure is involved to facilitate
construction, the scheme for dismantling
of the existing structure to be shown in
plans.
 The dismantling of structure should be
under proper supervision and as per
approved scheme of dismantling.
Contd. …

 At major dismantling sites minimum level of

supervision - SSE/Works (In-charge),
nominated by Dy.CE / Sr.DEN in writing.
 The dismantling plan should be scrutinized
by Drawing office and approved by Sr.DEN
in case of open line organization or H.O.D.
in case of construction organization.
Contd. …

The dismantling plan should contain –

 Stages of dismantling;
 Equipment to be used for dismantling;
 Area likely to be affected by debris;
 Any adjacent building likely to be
affected and action to be taken thereof.
Contd. …

 Proper barricading should be done to

stop access of unauthorized persons
near dismantling area.
 Assistance of RPF should be taken
wherever required.
 Signage's for warning people not to
enter the danger zone, to be displayed.
Contd. …

 Proper announcement through public

address system to be done at regular
intervals.
 The adjacent building likely to be affected
to be evacuated.
 In area where law and order is likely to be
affected, take assistance of local police to
keep people away from dismantling area.
 AMCE’s Letter No 97/CE/BRC/158
(Policy) Dated 06.12.06
 N.Rly. circular no CAO/C/Saety/2000
Dated 19.09.2000
Precautions prior to demolition

 Bracing, shoring to be done to prevent

accidental collapse.
 Use of explosive be done after approval
of competent authority & after taking
necessary precautions.
 All service lines – gas, water, electricity,
steam etc. be shut off after notifying
concerned authority & approval.
Contd. …
 Barricading & Danger Signs
 Two independent exit to be kept for

escape of workman in emergency

 Warning lights during night,

Temporary service connection reqd.

for demolition be taken separately
 Watchman for checking unauthorized
entry
 Safety appliances to workers
 Safety precautions against fire
 Proper clothing to workers
 Protection of Public
 Safetydistance for public be
maintained
 All buildings in safety zone be
evacuated.
 All road in safety zone to be closed

or protected properly or diverted.

Precaution during demolition

• Before demolition all fragile nature

material like glass be removed
• Dust be controlled
• Stocking of Debris should not be
within safe limits of structural member
• Additional support be provided
wherever required.
• Adequate light & ventilation
Sequence of Demolition

 Should be systematic storey by storey

or phase by phase in proper
sequence.
 Demolition of upper storey/Previous
phase be complete & approved by
engineer before taking next
storey/phase or removing supporting
members
 Walls

 Part by Part in reasonable level course.

 Fall of large masses not to be allowed.
 Removal of debris at frequent intervals.
 Staging be provided if wall in less than
1½ brick thick or working above wall is
dangerous.
 Lateral bracing for unsound walls.
 RCC beam

 Supporting rope be provided first.

 Then concrete be removed from

both end & reinforcement be

exposed.
 The reinforcement be cut properly

to allow beam lowered under

control.
 RCC column

 At top restraining wire rope be placed

 Reinforcement at bottom be enforced
& cut in such way to pull down
column in control manner.
- RCC Walls

Be cut in strips and demolish as

columns.
Contd. …
 Suspended floor & roofs
 Cut into strips parallel to main

reinforcement & demolish strip by strip

 Precast RCC
 Due precaution be taken to avoid

toppling over of prefabricated units or

any other part of structure
 Temporary support be provided as

necessary
Contd. …

 Dismantling of PSC Structure

Expert advice be obtained & proper
scheme be made as per type of
structure
Lowering, removal & disposal of
material

 As far as possible, material should not be

dropped.
 Material should be properly lowered.
 If chute angle is more than 45°with horizontal,
it should be closed on all four sides.
 If debris dropped on floor, over loading of
floor should be avoided.
 Material like glass, nails etc. be
handled carefully.
 Debris from side be removed in
stages.
 Stacking of material shall cater for
fire prevention.
Mechanical demolition
 Area shall be barricaded for minimum
1½ times of height of wall.
 No workman be allowed to enter
building during demolition in progress.
 Location of device be carefully fixed
to avoid damage.
 Device should not cause damage to
adjacent structure.
Miscellaneous

 Night working
 Should be avoided as far as

possible.
 If work done, additional precaution

be taken like more:-

 Red warning signals
 Working light
 watchmen
 Work should not be carried out during
storm and heavy rain.
 Warning devices for worker in danger.
 Safety devices like industrial safety
helmet, goggles etc.
 Construction shed & tool box be
located at safe place.
 Suitable gloves, if injury to hand is
expected like during demolition of
RCC & Steel structures.
 Overhead cover and screens.
 Safety belt or ropes at higher level
working.
First Aid

 Copy of all relevant regulation be displayed.

 Depending upon nature, a qualified first aid
