DESRCIBE THE GENERAL

TYPES OF
INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
Intermolecular forces
O Is the physical forces between molecules. It
explain how the molecules interact with each
other. The strength or weakness of
intermolecular forces determine the state of
matter of a substance (e.g., solid, liquid, gas) and
some of the chemical properties ( e.g., melting
point, structure). There are three major types of
intermolecular forces : London dispersion
force, dipole – dipole interaction, and ion –
dipole interaction.
Types of Intermolecular force that
exist in molecules
O 1. Dipole – Dipole
Interactions : these
forces occur when the
partially positively
charge part of a
molecule interacts with
the partially negatively
charge part of the
neighboring molecule.
Types of Intermolecular force that
exist in molecules
O 2. Hydrogen
bonding : this is a
special kind of dipole
– dipole interaction
that occurs specifically
between a hydrogen
atom bonded to either
an oxygen, nitrogen,
or flourine atom.
Types of Intermolecular force that
exist in molecules
O 3. London dispersion
forces : these are the
weakest of the
intermolecular forces
and exist between all
types of molecules,
whether ionic or
covalent – polar or
non polar.
