PHYSICAL AND
CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES
MS. VIA YSABEL M. MANACOP
DISCUSSANT
OBJECTIVES:
 Differentiate between physical and
chemical properties of matter
 Identify properties of matter as physical
or chemical
 Identify properties of matter as
extensive or intensive
The characteristics that enable
us to distinguish one
substance from another are
called properties.

PROPERTIES OF MATTER ACCORDING
TO CHANGES INVOLVED DURING
MEASUREMENTS OF THE PROPERTY
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
AND CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
 It is a characteristic of
matter that is not associated
with a change in its chemical
composition. These can be
measured and observed
without changing the
composition of the
substance.

CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES

These are the ability of a
substance to react with
other substance such as air
and water.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Combustibility
Whether the substance undergoes combustion
or not

Stability
Whether the substance can be easily
decomposed or not
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Reactivity
Whether it reacts to acids, bases, and oxygen or not

Ionization
Whether it will break into charged particles when in
solution with water or not

Toxicity
Whether the substance can damage an organism or not
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
ACCORDING TO DEPENDENCE OR
AMOUNT OF MATTER
INTENSIVE AND
EXTENSIVE PROPERTIES
INTENSIVE PROPERTIES

It does not depend on the size or
amount of the samples.
Ex. Color, solubility, melting
point, density, temperature,
boiling point, odor

EXTENSIVE PROPERTIES

These can be affected

by the size and amount
of samples.
Ex. Mass, volume,
length
