(conceiving, drawing, 3D modeling) a
structure that will be built using primarily
wood elements from raw logs (log cabin) to
milled timbers and or engineered wood
products like glulam beams and columns and
cross laminated timber panels for floors and
walls.

  Kontum Indochine Café is

designed as a part of a hotel complex
along Dakbla River in Kontum City,
Middle Vietnam. Adjacent to Dakbla
Bridge, a gateway to Kontum City, the
cafeteria serves as a breakfast, dinner
and tea venue for hotel guests. It also
functions as a semi-outdoor banquet hall
for wedding ceremonies.

The challenge of the project is to respect
the nature of bamboo as a material and
to create a distinctive space unique to
bamboo. The material characteristics of
bamboo are different from that of
timber or steel. If the details and
construction methods of timber or steel
structures are applied to bamboo
structures, the advantages of bamboo
may be impaired. For instance, using
steel joints kill the cost benefit of
bamboo structures. Steel pin joint
generates too much local loads which is
not appropriate for bamboo, which
tends to be subject to buckling.

KENGO KUMA
Kengo Kuma Born in Yokohama in the Kanagawa prefecture, Kengo Kuma
(1954) is considered one of the most significant contemporary Japanese
architects.
After graduating from the University of Tokyo (1979), he studied at Colombia
University for two years as a visiting researcher (1985-86).

Kazuyo Sejima, Kuma is also noted for his prolific writings.
This shop, specialized in selling
pineapple cake (popular sweet in
Taiwan), is in the shape of a bamboo
basket. It is built on a joint system
called “Jiigoku-Gumi,” traditional
method used in Japanese wooden
architecture (often observed in Shoji:
vertical and cross pieces in the same
width are entwined in each other to
form a muntin grid).

The 6-star hotel resort Soneva Kiri is
located on Koh Kood in the Gulf of
Thailand. This quirky site, 24H-
architecture designed a cycle of
ecological images to contribute to Six
Senses’ high ambitions in design and
ecology. Most prominent is the Children
Activity & Learning Centre, which will
provide visiting children with a wide
range of entertaining activities as well as
raise the quantity of ecological
awareness with others. This Den
provides an Auditorium/Cinema for
films, lectures and plays, a library with
books on permaculture and local
traditions, an Art room, a Music room,
and a Fashion room, Therefore giving
children both creative and ecological
education while playing.
The objective for the project was to design a fun an inspiring surrounding for the
children’s activities. Inspiration was found in tropical underwater world, with its beautiful
colored corals and fish, of which the amazing manta ray was chosen as credit for the
building’s concept. The Den is located at a rocky slope close to the sea. With its Manta-ray
inspired bamboo dome, perched in an elevated position so as to offer magnificent views, it
seems to launch itself into the bay.
The design adopts all bioclimatic aspects to suits its humid tropical environment. The
open design with the setback floors and elevated rooftop provide natural cross-ventilation.
The roof cantilevers uo to 8 meters acting like a big umbrella providing shade and
protection from the heavy rains. The translucent elevated rooftop in the centre of the
building allows natural daylight in the building, limiting the energy consumption.

The main challenge of the project was to make a contemporary design with a
traditional material, therefore material and design research had to be made and
experts had to be consulted during the design process.
Being one of the most experienced bamboo builders in the world, Jorg
Stamm from Eco Bamboo was consulted. Bringing in Stamm’s bamboo expertise
was crucial in the realization of this project since bamboo is a very specific
building material which is very light and strong but also vulnerable to termites
and climate, if not applied properly. Therefore, all bamboo has been treated with
Boron, a natural salt based treatment, to protect it from termites and other
insects.
