Features
• It is also called as a Single Value Capacitor
Motor. As the capacitor is always in the circuit
and thus this type of motor does not contain any
starting switch. The auxiliary winding is always
there in the circuit.  Therefore, the motor
operates as the balanced two-phase motor. The
motor produces a uniform torque and has noise
free operation.
Advantages
• The Single Value Capacitor Motor has following
advantages:
• No centrifugal switch is required.
• Efficiency is high.
• As the capacitor is connected permanently in the
circuit, the power factor is high.
• It has a higher pullout torque.
• Uniform Developed torque and low noise
Applications and Limitations
• Applizations
• PSC are common for fans as they don't normally require high starting torque. A lot
of hermetic compressors are PSC. Low starting torque is alright as long as
refrigerant pressure is equalized when starting.
• Compressor air conditioner, blowers in heaters
• Ceiling fans which do not require normal or high starting torques.
• Domestic Water Pumps

The limitations of the motor are as follows:-

• The paper capacitor is used in the motor as an Electrolytic capacitor cannot be
used for continuous running. The cost of the paper capacitor is higher, and size is
also large as compared to the electrolytic capacitor of the same ratings.
• It has low starting torque, less than full load torque.
Ceiling Fan Motor Application of PSC
• Since a fan load requires low starting Torque the PSC is used for
ceiling fan. It has low noise and higher efficiency the motor is suitable
for domestic applications.
• Features:
Inverted construction, ie.,the rotor is outside the stator.
Fan blades are directly connected to the rotor.
Rotor cooling is effective and reduces rotor Cu loss.
Number of poles are higher 16,18, etc. for lower speed.
Higher pf and efficiency.
Low noise.
Speed Control
By Voltage Control.
By Inserting impedance in series so that the voltage across the motor
is controlled.

Speed Reversal
• The direction of field is from aux winding to main winding.
• So for normal motor speed reversal is not possible.

• In special cases speed reversal can be achieved by using another aux

winding in the opposite side of the 1st Aux winding.
