identify the pumps that are used in the aircraft its industry and gives an

explanation about it

Types of pumps in aircraft

1 Fuel pump
2 Hydraulic pump
3 Lubrication pump
4 Water and waste system pumps
5 Air conditioning and cooling pumps
1 . FUEL PUMP SYSTEM

Aircraft with fuel pump system have TWO fuel pumps

The main pump system ENGINE DRIVEN auxiliary
pump provided for use in engine starting and in the event the engine
pump fails
THE AUXILIARY PUMP, also knows as a BOOST PUMP
provides added reliability to the fuel system. The electrically driven
auxiliary pump is controlled by a switch in the flight deck

FUEL PRIMER

Both gravity feed and fuel pump systems may incorporate a fuel
primer into the system
The FUEL PRIMER is used to draw fuel from tanks to vaporize
fuel directly into the cylinders prior to starting the engine
During cold weather, when engines are difficult to start , the
fuel primer helps because there is not enough HEAT AVAILABLE TO
VAPORIZE THE FUEL in the carburetor

FUEL TANKS

The Fuel tanks normally located inside the wingsof the airplane have
a filter opening on the top of the wings through which they can be filled.
The tanks are vented to be outside to maintain atmospheric pressure
inside the tanks.
This allow fuel to expand with increases in temperature without
damage to the tank
FUEL PUMP SYSTEM
FUEL GAUGES

The fuel quantity gauges indicates the amount of fuel measured

by a sensing unit in each fueltank and is displayed in GALLONS or
POUNDS
If a fuel pump is installed in the fuel system , a fuel pressure
gauge is also included.
This gauges indicates the PRESSURE in the fuel lines

FUEL SELECTORS

The fuel selectors valve allows selection of fuel from various tanks.
A common type of selector valve contains foue positions:
LEFT
RIGHT
BOTH
OFF

FUEL STRAINERS,SUMPS,AND DRAINS.

The fuel strainers should be drained before each flight.fuel samples

should be drained and checked visually for water and contaminants.
water in the sump is hazardous because in cold weather the water
can freeze and block fuel lines.
[ Never takeoff until all the water and contaminants have been
removed from the engine fuel system]
TYPES OF AIRCRAFT FUEL PUMPS

1 Hand operated fuel pumps

2 Centrifugal boost pumps
3 Ejector pumps
4 Pulsating electric pumps
5 Vane type fuel pumps
HAND OPERATED FUEL PUMP

• Some older reciprocating engine aircraft have been equipped with

HAND OPERATED FUEL PUMP.
CENTRIFUGAL BOOST PUMPS

• The most common type of auxiliary fuel pump used on aircraft ,

especially large and high performance aircraft, is the CENTRIFUGAL
PUMP.
• A Centrifugal boost pump is a VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT PUMP
• This pump is used to supply the engine driven fuel pump back the
engine driven fuel pump, and transfer fuel from tank if the aircraft is
so designed

EJECTOR PUMPS
• Fuel tanks with in tank fuel pumps such as CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS are
constructed to maintain a fuel supply to the pump inlet at all times.
• Some aircraft use a EJECTOR PUMPS to helps ensure that liquid fuel is
always at the inlet of the pump.
PULSATING ELECTRIC PUMPS
• General aviation aircraft often make use of smaller ,less expensive
auxiliary fuel pump. THE PULSATING ELECTRIC PUMP ,or PLUNGER
TYPE FUEL PUMP, is common used.
• This pump is plumbed in parallel with the ENGINE DRIVEN PUMP.
VANE TYPE FUEL PUMP
This pump are the most common types of fuel pumps found on the
RECIPROCATING ENGINE AIRCRAFT.
There are used as both engine driven primary pumps and as a auxiliary
or boost pumps.
02. AIRCRAFT HYDRAULIC SYSTRM

PUMP
All aircraft hydraulic system have one or more power driven pumps and may have a hand pumps as an
additional unit when the engine driven pumps is inoperative.
• Some aircraft can deploy A RAM AIR TURBINE to generate hydraulic power.
• The hydraulic pumps are,
Hand pumps
Power driven hydraulic pumps

CLASSIFICATION OF PUMPS
All pumps are classified as positive displacement pump and non positive displacement
pumps
Most pump used in HYDRAULIC SYSTEM are POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT.
HAND PUMPS

• The hydraulic hand pump is used in some older aircraft for the
operation of hydraulic subsystems and in a few newer aircraft system
as a backup unit.
• DOUBLE ACTION HAND PUMP
produces fluid flow and pressure
on each stroke of the handle

DOUBLE ACTION HAND PUMP -

A ROTARY HAND PUMP
• A rotary hand pump may also be employed. It produces continuous
output while the handle is in motion
POWER DRIVEN HYDRAULIC
PUMP
• Modern aircraft use s combination of engine driven power pumps,
electrical driven power pumps, air driven power pumps, power transfer
units, pumps driven by a RAM

ENGINE DRIVEN POWER PUMP ELECTRICALLY DP PUMP

GEAR TYPE POWER PUMP
• This pump is a CONSTANT DISPLACEMENT PUMP.
A GEROTOR PUMP
• This pump consists of essentially of a housing containing an eccentric
shaped stationary liner, an internal gear rotor having seven wide teeth
of a short height, super driving gear having six narrow teeth etc….

A GEROTOR PUMP
PISTON PUMP
• Piston pumps can be CONSTANT DISPLACEMENT or VARIABLE
DISPLACEMENT PUMPS.
AXIAL PISTON PUMP
All aircraft axial piston pump have an odd number of
pistons
VANE PUMP
• The vane type power pump is also a CONSTANT DISPLACEMENT
PUMP
VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT
PUMP
• This pump has a fluid output that is varied to meet the pressure
demands of the system
• The pump output is changed automatically by a pump compensator
with in the pump
03.LUBRICATION PUMPS OR OIL
PUMPS
• The oil pimp is designed to supply oil under pressure to the parts of
the engine that requires lubrication.
• The most common oil pumps are the GEAR AND GEROTOR , with
GEAR TYPE being the most commonly used.
• The oil pumps are,
VANE PUMPS
GEROTOR PUMPS
GEAR PUMPS
VANE PUMP

• Vane pumps are a CONSTANT DISPLACEMENT PUMP more often

found in the scavenge side of the lubrication system as they are more
tolerant of debris and have a high volume and relatively low pressure.
GEROTOR PUMP
• Gerotor pump are a CONSTANT DISPLACEMENT PUMP and are used in
both the pressure side and the scavenge side of the engine.
GEAR PUMP
• Gear pump are the most commonly used CONSTANT DISPLACEMEMT
PUMP and can be found in the either the scavenge side or the
pressure side.
04. WATER AND WASTE SYSTEM
PUMPS
The Potable Water Pump
The Waste Tank

THE POTABLE WATER PUMP

The potable water pump pressurizes the potable water system
either with or without support by thr engine bleed air system on a constant
pressure level.
This ducted impeller centrifugal pump is powered by a ELECTRIC
MOTOR and is in most cases designed for a continuous operation.
THE POTABLE WATER PUMP
An embedded pressure sensor is measuring the existing pressure and
controlling the pumps variable revolution speed in order to reach and
keep the desired pressure level.
A heating system saves the pump from freezing while being non
operative.
THE WATER TANK
• The water tank module stores the waste received from the tubing the
entire flight for discharge on the ground.
• It is equipped with level measurement
05. COOLING PUMP

• When air is taken aboard on AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT , it undergoes an

increases in pressure is called the RAM EFFECT. And a cooling system
which uses such air is called a RAM AIR COOLING SYSTEM.
