Globalisation...
• Globalization refers to increases the movement of all
economic aspects cutting across boundaries of native
states aiming at the integration of the domestic
economy with global economy.

• The wake of globalization was first felt in the 1990s in

India when the then finance minister, Dr Manmohan
Singh initiated the economic liberalization plan.

• Globalisation has increased the production of goods

and services.
How does globalisation affect our
lives?
Media...

Channels of communication that serve many diverse

functions:-

• Either mass or specialised appeal.
• Communicating news and information.
• Displaying advertising messages.
Types of Media...

buying and placement for advertising.
 Electronic media, communications delivered
via electronic or electromechanical energy.
 Digital media, electronic media used to
store,transmit and receive digitalized
information.
 Electronic business media, digital media for

incorporate multiple forms of information
content and processing.
 Print media, communication derived via
paper or canvas.
 Social media, media disseminated through
social interaction.
 Mass media, all means of mass
communication.
 News media, mass media focused on
communicating news.
Globalisation could have involve all
these things...
So where does the media fit into Globalisation...?

Boyle (2007) argues that the

mass media has changed
the way young people see
themselves. Young people
spend more and more
time online on social
networks with a global reach.
How does media being globalized...?
Media can be globalized through:-

 Media ownership
 Media content
 Media access

 Globalization makes media more

commercial,supported by advertising.
Media,Power and You...!
Globalisation of media has power to:-

 Create media
 Distribute media
 Exhibit media
 Censor media
 Consume media

 Key question:- is globalisation a

process of cultural homogenisation???
Globalisation of social media...
Major reasons leading to
globalisation...

 Advent of new media technology and

internet.

 Advent of transnational corporations.

 Advent of digital and satellite technologies.

Impact of Globalization on
Media...
 India is one of the world‘s largest markets
for satellite TV, with some 300 million
viewers. The Indian economy opened up in
the 1990s after decades of being closed.

 The film industry, known as Bollywood, is

the largest feature film producer in the
world, larger than Hollywood, with some
300 feature films a year.
Contd...
 While there has been a long tradition of cinema
movies in India, satellite TV has meant more foreign
films being broadcast.

 Earlier television started with only a few channels,

showing cable, but today there are over 200
channels screening 200 different things. Today, you
can view channels from across the nation which
helps you get an idea of the lifestyle and culture of
the westernized nations.
Globalization and changes in
Agriculture sector

 Changes in food basket.

 Changes in agricultural market sector.
 Changes in agricultural exports.
 Changes in the share of agricultural
employment.
 Change in the share of Agriculture in GDP.
 Change in the area of cultivation.
 Contract farming and corporate farming.
Key impact of Globalisation on
Agriculture...

 Agricultural land been taken or encroched for

development of industries.
 Because of globalisation the competition in

Agriculture sector has increased,US has got many of

India's High earning agricultural products patent in
WTO (like basmati rice, turmeric etc) and that's why
indian govt need to pay US government for their
production.
 FDI was introduced in industrial and service but

agricultural sector was kept protected and hence

capital formation in agriculture is negligible.
Globalisation: Growth rate on Agriculture (%)...

Crop/sector Pre-reform period Post-reform period

(1980-1990) (1996-2006)
Agriculture 3.6 2.6

Forestry 4.2 2.5

Fisheries 0.1 0.5

Food grains 2.9 1.5

Rice 3.7 2.0

Wheat 3.6 3.6

Pulses 1.4 0.5

Limitations of Media Globalisation

 Small media houses have to go out of

business because they can't compete with the
multinational media functionaries.
 Poses threats to socio-cultural values.
 Insecurity in jobs and income.
 Gap between small media and multinational

media increases.
 Rise in unfair competition.
Conclusion

Globalization in the media has definitely got some

negative aspects to it but however the advantages are
way more and therefore there is a remarkable progress
in development in all economic, social, political, cultural
and traditional aspects. Globalization is not just
integrating trade, investment and financial markets but
also integrating the consumer markets via mass media
exposure. At the same time the consumer receives an
overflow of information through commercial advertising
with the help of different modes of media.
