Speed is the magnitude of instantaneous velocity; that is, speed is velocity that has no
indication of direction either in words or via an algebraic sign. For example, a velocity
of +5 m/s or -5m/s is associated with a speed of 5m/s.
ACCELERATION
Suppose an object that can be modeled as a particle moving along the x axis
has an initial velocity vxi at time ti at position A and a final velocity vxf at
time tf at position B as in Figure 1. The average acceleration ax,avg of the
particle is defined as the change in velocity ∆vx divided by the time interval
∆t during which that change occurs:
We shall use the term acceleration to mean instantaneous acceleration. When we mean
average acceleration, we shall always use the adjective average. Because vx = dx/dt, the
acceleration can also be written as
