CONFLICT STUDY IN

BESRAYA
EXPRESSWAY
NUR ATIQAH BINTI HALIM GS53995
SITI AISHAH BINTI KHAIRUL AZAM GS53950
INTROCUDTION

• This 28.3 km expressway is built to connect eastern

side of Kuala Lumpur to Sungai Besi toll plaza and
Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway to Kuala
Lumpur, avoiding traffic jam along
North-South Expressway (PLUS) Southern Route.
• Besraya’s linkages to major roads provide an
alternative route for traffic heading north towards
Kuala Lumpur City Center, Petaling Jaya, Kuantan,
Ampang, Cheras and for those heading south towards
Seri Kembangan, Balakong, Putrajaya and Seremban.
• With the expansion of the highway, Besraya effectively
serves as the South Eastern Urban Connector for Klang
Valley linking the southern urban centres such as Seri
Kembangan, Serdang and as far as Putrajaya, with the
eastern urban such as Pandan and Cheras.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

• It was reported in 2015 that the Selangor government allocated RM36million for the one-way road project in Jalan Besar,
which was implemented in April 2014.
• But even with the implementation, there is still a bottleneck at the junction heading to the Sungai Besi Expressway, which
leads to areas like Balakong, The Mines and Taman Sungai Besi.
• The traffic problem there also affects those living in Serdang and travelling to Balakong and Putrajaya or Kajang as well as
those from Balakong who want to enter Serdang or use the road to head to Kuala Lumpur in order to avoid toll.
• At first, the elevated highway from North was double lane. But, recently they make it as one lane so that people from Seri
Kembangan can use in order to travel to Balakong or Serdang
• In front of The Mines, there are traffic light. So people from North or Seri Kembangan if they want to go to Balakong they
will try to avoid the traffic light. Therefore, it will stuck at the lane that used by people from North to go to Balakong
• Therefore, the management will put some cones so that people from Seri Kembangan that want to go to Balakong must go
through the traffic light during peak hours. This is because that kind of condition will cause accident in any way.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Highly traffic-jammed

Bottleneck
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The problem at this point occur when people from 5 major city using the junction in one time. Thus,
the number of conflict at thus point is high.
1. Point 1, people from North either Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya and so on want to travel to either
Balakong or Seri Kembangan or Serdang, they will use this road. People from Seri Kembangan want
to travel to Balakong or Serdang also using the same road.
2. Point 2, people from Seri Kembangan want to travel to either North or Balakong or Serdang.
3. Point 3, people from Serdang or Bangi want to travel to either Seri Kembangan or Balakong or to
North.
4. Point 4, people from Balakong want to travel to either Serdang or Seri Kembangan or South City or to
North.
5. Point 5, people from South City want to travel back to Seri Kembangan. This is because there is no U-
Turn area provided along the way. Only provided for people from Serdang that want to go to North.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

5. FROM

PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The problem at this point occur at this junction zoomed in the picture above. To many road user
used the same road. Thus, increase the number of traffic conflict and number of accident.
1. Point 1, People from North want to travel to Balakong, they will use the road. Eventhough, there
is one way that heading to Serdang and also Balakong which is lack of people used because of
they need to go through traffic light if they want to go to Balakong.
2. Point 2, People from Seri Kembangan want to travel to Balakong or Serdang and enter the road
that used by people from North.
3. Point 3, People from KTM Serdang that want to travel to Balakong they will make a U-Turn at
here. Then, meet people from North and Seri Kembangan.
4. Point 4, People from Serdang want to go to North.
5. Point 5, People from Balakong want to travel to Seri Kembangan or North.
6. Point 6, people from South City need to make a U-Turn to travel back to Seri Kembangan.

SOLUTION 1
• These solutions is based on our knowledge and perception. Further study and also deep field study need to
be done in order to check whether its applicable or not.
1. Built an elevated highway like butterfly highway so that people from South City can make a proper U-Turn
to go back to Seri Kembangan.
2. People from Seri Kembangan also using the road to go to Balakong and not affected by people from North
as the road that provided for people from North to go to Balakong will be cut off.
3. We can assign people from North to go to Balakong to use the same road as people want to go to Serdang
eventhough there will be traffic light in front. Plus, it also will not effect the people to go to Serdang as the
road has two lane and there is small number of people that want to go to Serdang using the road.
4. People from KTM Serdang that want to travel to Balakong still can make U-Turn at the same road and will
meet people from Seri Kembangan. But, the conflict is reduced as the people from North using the other way
to go to Balakong.
• So this will reduce the people using the same road by assign them to use different way to travel thus reduce
the traffic conflict. Once traffic conflict is reduce, then the potential number of accident to happen will
reduce.
SOLUTION 1

Elevated half-
butterfly highway
SOLUTION 1

Changes plan at the elevated highway

SOLUTION 2
SOLUTION 2

• Built a highway cross from North to Jalan Belimbing to assign people from North that
want to travel to Balakong
• But deep field study need to be done to ensure the suitability of the highway.
