Introduction
• Plantation Agriculture is a form of
commercial farming where crops are
grown for profit.
• It was introduced by the Europeans in
the tropical and subtropical regions.

This type of agriculture needed :
• Large land areas called ‘estates’
Needs • Cheap and skilled labor
• Lot of investment
• Tropical climate with high annual rainfall.

Plantations
• Mostly crops of tea, coffee, sugarcane,
rubber, banana and spices are grown.
• They are managed like industrial units.
• Examples of such farming are the
rubber plantings in Malaysia, Coffee
plantations in Brazil and Banana
plantations in West Indies.
