INTRODUCTION
A water pipe is any pipe or tube designed to transport
treated drinking water to consumers. The varieties
include
large diameter main pipes, which supply
smaller branch entire towns, lines that supply a
buildings, or smallstreet
diameterorpipes
group of
located within individual
buildings. Materials commonly used to construct water pipes
include cast iron, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), copper, steel or
concrete.
TYPES OF PIPES
 Steel Pipes
 Cast Iron Pipes
 Concrete Pipes
 Galvanized pipes
 PVC Pipes
 CPVC
 Copper pipe
 Vitrified clay pipe
 Asbestos pipes
CAST IRON PIPE
 Durable
 Strong
 Resistance to corrosion
• Ease in laying and simplicity
 Long life : expected to last 100 yrs
 Heavy weight : transportation Problem
 Come usually in Short length
• Cannot handle High pressure greater
 than 700kN/m2
 Likely to break during transportation or
 during connection
 Problem of tuberculation

 Use: distributary mains

 Provide : Underground or Under roads

STEEL PIPE
 Expensive
 Less resistance against corrosion
 Life range : 25 to 50 yrs
 Light in weight than cast iron
 Low transportation cost than cast iron

 Can withstand high water pressure,
 come in convenient (longer) lengths
 Cannot withstand heavy compressive load
 In order to increase their resistance against
corrosion , mortar layer can be applied over its
internal surface by centrifugation known as hume
steel pipe
 USE : Pumping main
 Provide : raw water truck mains , inverted
syphon
REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPES
 Reinforcement provided to achieve
tensile strength
 crown corrosive takes place
 Posses life 75 yrs
• Strong in compression
 Difficult to Repair
•Brittle in nature likely to break during
transportation
 Seepage and leakage problem
 These pipe undergoe hydrogen
sulphide corrosion

 However, being bulky and heavy,

they are harder and more costly to
handle, install and transport
 Application : pumping main and
sewers
ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPE
 Not used as pressure pipe but
widely used in sewerage and
drainage for flow at partial depth
 Flexible in nature

 Corrosion free

GALVANISED PIPE
 Mild steel sheet coated with zinc
 Average age 40 -60 yrs
 Light weighted and cheap
 Acidic and alkaline waters affect
these pipes badly
 Resistance against corrosion

 Can be used to transport grey
water. (drain water)
 Also Use for high
temperature or pressure
manufacturing processes.
PVC PIPE
• PVC FULL NAME IS POLY VINYL
CHLORIDE.

• USED FOR HOT AND COLD POTABLE
WATER AS WELL WITH SEWAGE

APPLICATION.
• VARY ON THEIR THICKNESS AND
CONFIGURATION DEPENDING ON

THE APPLICATION WHERE TO BE
USED.
Copper Water Pipe
Not commonly used in the present
situation

Usually used for hot and cold water in

the industry and as well as in house also

Also used in the connection related to

overhead tank
