Many pilgrims traveled to Mecca to pray at the

Ka’ba (Doc A). They traveled with merchants
who traded spices, perfumes, precious metals,
ivory, and silk (Doc A). These goods came from
as far away as Africa, India, and China (Map
Doc A). Muhammad converted the Ka’ba from
polytheistic to monotheistic and instructed
Muslims to make pilgrimages to Mecca (Class

ensured the trade routes were safe and
protected (Doc E #3).

and the conclusion to write on your own.
• Each Body (PEP) Paragraph must follow the
above format.
– Use the sentences from your thesis to start each
Body (PEP) Paragraph.
• Your conclusion should summarize your main
ideas.
– Tell why the other factors are not as important
– Prove why trade (or your choice) is the most
important.
CONCLUSION
While all three factors are important, it was Mecca’s
connection to global trade routes that helped to spread the
religion the most. It’s central location allowed the city to be a
hub for the religion to spread to far away regions. The
military conquered more territory and brought more trade
routes under their control. As the Muslim’s territory and
trade routes grew, many people began to favor Muslim rule
because of their fair and equal legal system. When new
territory was added the trade routes were protected and kept
secure. This security then encouraged new people to convert
creating a large and diverse Islamic Empire. Without trade
Islam would have remained a local religion and never left the
Arabian Peninsula.
